Nine of the A’s top 10 picks were college products, a callback to their
Moneyball days.Richie Martin (1st) and Mikey White (2nd), a pair of SEC
shortstops, lead off their draft and both have long track records of
performance in the nation’s best college conference. The lone high school
player the A’s picked in the top 10 rounds was third rounder Dakota Chalmers,
a Georgia prep righthander with plenty of arm strength and projectability.

OAKLAND ATHLETICS
1-20) Richie Martin, SS, Florida
2-63) Mikey White, SS, Alabama
3-97) Dakota Chalmers, RHP, Georgia HS
4-128) Skye Bolt, OF, North Carolina
5-158) Kevin Duchene, LHP, Illinois
COMMENT: Like the Angels, the Athletics early in the draft mixed one high-
upside-but-raw player, Dakota Chalmers, with four college guys. Chalmers could
become a top-of-the-rotation starter or an A-ball fizzle. Martin and White will
both get to the majors but it is uncertain if they’ll hit enough to be more
than just decent pieces. Bolt has an excellent tool set but his hitting record
has never matched the talent perceived by scouts. Given his first-round tools,
he’s a good gamble in the fourth. Duchene has average stuff but an
exceptionally tenacious approach to pitching. College players remained the
focus otherwise, with Bowdien "Bubba" Derby (6th round, RHP, San Diego State),
Kyle Friedrichs (7th round, RHP, Long Beach State) being advanced enough to
help the major league staff fairly soon. Sleeper power bat: Seth Brown, 19th
round, first baseman from Lewis-Clark State College in Idaho.

I thought Richie Martin (1) had a chance to be a strong first-rounder coming
into the year, but saw real problems with his approach at the plate -- he had
trouble with anything inside -- and I heard that his defense had become more
erratic as the year went on, although he's still an outstanding athlete with
all the physical tools to be plus at short. Mikey White (2) is the converse;
he's less athletic and more instinctive, with a simple swing that should
produce more contact than it does but has the finish to drive the ball to the
gaps. He's at even money to move over to second base.Dakota Chalmers (3) has a
plus fastball and a very sharp spike curveball with a violent delivery that, if
it can't be smoothed out, would probably push him to the bullpen. … Skye
Bolt (4) looked like a first-rounder as a freshman at UNC, but the bat hasn't
played since then, although he does walk some and hits for power. He's a decent
upside play to see if getting him into a new system and off campus can unlock
what was there in 2013. … Kevin Duchene (5) was the Friday-night starter for
Illinois this year, a command right-hander who never walks anyone but has a
fringy fastball, relying more on a cutter. He was suspended twice earlier in
the season by the team.

Oakland A’s
This was another interesting draft that reminded me a bit of the Pirates draft,
as well. The first pick was Florida SS Richie Martin, a player who is 20 years
old and won’t be 21 until December. For almost half of the year, he will be
just a year older than Brendan Rodgers even though he is a college junior at
one of the top programs in the country and Rodgers is coming out of high
school. Martin should be a plus defender with plus speed. The bat will need
some work. He was surging as the draft approached.Second pick Mikey White, a
shortstop from Alabama, was projected by most to move to second and it seems
natural he will move there to pair with Martin as they move through the A’s
system. White is the king of grit in this year’s class but it is his 55-grade
potential hit tool that got him drafted. A hard worker, he reminds me a little
bit of current A’s prospect Joey Wendle.
Eric Kubota:
“We really thought that college shortstops were a strength in this draft. That
is more how we ended up with the guys we ended up picking rather than it being
about any specific strategy about taking two shortstops. There are a lot of
things we like about Richie.First and foremost are his tools and athleticism.
He’s an elite athlete. He can really run, can really throw. We think his
defense has a chance to be special. He’s an improving performer with the bat;
he was very good in the he was very good in the Cape (Cod League) last summer
and had a very good spring this year. We think he’s got a chance to pretty
much do everything at shortstop. We really like the energy and athleticism he
brings. We have a good relationship with him.We know the kid, we think, and we
know the make-up. That certainly helps us make this decision. We think he is
just a baseball rat. We think he is going to maximize the ability that he has.
He is a team leader and a hard worker. He just has a positive baseball
make-up.He’s an outstanding athlete, so his agility and his quickness
translates to big range [at short].At the same time, we feel good about his
ability to make the routine play. He also has the arm strength to make the
routine throw and all of the necessary throws. There is nothing we don’t like
about his defense. You just naturally can see potential for additional physical
maturity and additional baseball development just purely based on the age.
(White)“We have a lot of guys who are very positive about his ability to stay
at shortstop. They are comparable in that they are high-performing shortstops
from arguably the best college conference in the county.Their physical
abilities are probably a little bit different. Richie is a little bit more
explosive and Mikey might have a bit more of a power component to his game, but
at the end of the day, the strongest similarity is that they are high-
performing college shortstops.
