And while he struggled with the bat in his first two seasons at Florida and in his first summer in the Cape Cod League, he gave cause for optimism by finishing second in the Cape in batting (.364) in 2014. Martin got stronger and shortened his right-handed swing, and as he became more confident and aggressive, he began driving more balls to the gaps, though he hasn't hit as well during his junior season back at Florida. He controls the strike zone reasonably well and has plus speed, making him a potential fit for the top of the order. Martin has the range and arm strength to make most of the plays at shortstop, though he can get error-prone when he tries to do too much. Harvey Shapiro, his Cape League manager, said Martin covers more ground than Arizona Diamondbacks defensive stalwart Nick Ahmed, whom Shapiro also skippered on the Cape. Athletics Drafted out of high school by the Mariners in the 38th round, Martin is now part of an unusually large crop of college shortstops with a chance to stay at the position as professionals. In the past, Martin has sometimes gotten himself into trouble by trying to do too much in the field. But this year he has done a better job of letting his athleticism take over and is playing the position with ease. He has plenty of range, soft hands and enough arm strength, though it doesn’t always earn true plus grades. Martin impressed scouts offensively last summer in the Cape Cod League. He set the Bourne record with a .364 batting average, which ranked second only to Kevin Newman (another well- regarded college shortstop). He has shown more power this year and there’s probably even more waiting to be unlocked in his lithe 6-foot, 185-pound frame, but his game remains based on getting on base. He sprays line drives to all fields, controls the strike zone and has above-average speed, giving him the profile of a top-of-the-order hitter. White has hit everywhere he has played, from high school and U.S. national 18-and-under teams to the Southeastern Conference and the Cape Cod League. He makes consistent contact and generates good pop for a middle infielder with a compact right-handed stroke. He has on-base skills as well and might fit into the No. 2 spot in a big league batting order. White's instincts allow him to play quicker than his fringy speed. He's not a flashy or rangy defender at shortstop, but he has reliable hands and makes plays. With a little more power, he could profile at third base if second base doesn't work out. But it was his performance this spring in the Georgia high school ranks that sent him shooting up Draft boards. Chalmers has a powerful right arm and has touched 98 mph with his fastball this spring. He more typically works in the low to mid 90s but has room for additional strength gains in his lean frame. He has a pair of quality breaking balls, and his changeup has made strides to round out his full arsenal. Despite there being some effort in his delivery, Chalmers generally works around the strike zone with all his pitches. He has a loose arm and good athleticism, which should help him clean up his delivery and pitch with better command as he gets more experience.
