But he hasn't been nearly as productive at the plate since breaking a bone in his foot that April, and though he'll still flash four plus tools, evaluators aren't sure what to make of him. A switch-hitter, Bolt has more bat speed and swings with more authority from the left side of the plate. Some scouts wonder if he'd be better off batting strictly left-handed. He has trouble catching up to quality fastballs and producing versus good pitching, and his pitch recognition needs a lot of work. If Bolt can figure things out at the plate and fully tap into his raw power, he'd be an easy first-round pick. He has an athletic 6-foot-2, 180-pound frame and solid speed and arm strength. He chases down balls in the gaps and should be able to handle center field as a pro. He's the No. 1 starter on an Illinois team that closed the regular season with 26 straight victories, and he carried a 22-3 career record into postseason play. He also played a key role in Yarmouth-Dennis' Cape Cod League title last summer, tossing a one-hitter in a decisive semifinal game and winning the championship clincher. Duchene lacks a plus pitch but he might have the best command in college baseball. His go-to offering is his low-80s cutter, and he has two more reliable secondary pitches in his curveball and changeup. He'll vary the speed on his curve from 72-78 mph and fades his change away from right-handers. Duchene's fastball parks around 88 mph and tops out at 91, playing up because it has some running life and he locates it so well. Scouts love his creativity and competitiveness, as well as how easily he repeats his sound mechanics. There are some makeup concerns, however, as off-field issues resulted in a two-week suspension early in the season. That doesn't mean a team should give up on him starting just yet. While he isn't tall and projectable, he is fairly physical and athletic. As a starter, he'll throw his fastball anywhere in the 89-95 mph range, sitting comfortably in the 91-92 mph range. When he closed games for the Aztecs as a freshman, he touched 96-97 mph in those shorter stints. His changeup is his best secondary offering and he has a really good feel for it, though he does throw it too frequently at times. He mixes in a slider as well. A team could send Derby out as a starter to allow him to build up his feel for his three-pitch mix, but he could move quickly, with an up-tick in his stuff, in a relief role.
