Overall: 55
The hope, especially for the Phillies with the No. 1 overall pick, was that Puk
would use his frontline rotation stuff and separate himself from the rest of
the class, making him the slam-dunk choice for being taken 1-1. Inconsistency,
which has plagued him for much of his career at Florida, not to mention some
time on the shelf with back spasms, made Puk more of a wild card than hoped.
Big and strong, Puk arguably has the best raw stuff of any arm in the class,
with the chance to have three plus pitches. He's capable of touching 96-97 mph
with his fastball regulary. Ironically, he might have been at his best in the
one inning he threw before his back acted up, showing a 96-99 mph fastball and
a plus slider at 88-90 mph. He can maintain his velocity deep into starts and
while his changeup is his third pitch, it should be Major League average in the
future.
Puk's biggest stumbling block has been his control and command, something that
has kept him from dominating college competition consistently. Puk only missed
one start with those back spasms and a huge start at the SEC tournament
cemented his place at, or near, the top of the Draft.

6. ATHLETICS: A.J. Puk, lhp, Florida
The top-ranked player in Florida’s top-ranked 2013 recruiting class, Puk has
developed into a potential top overall pick in college. He broke out as a
sophomore, helping Florida to the College World Series and then pitching for
USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team. A Preseason All-American, Puk was
inconsistent at the start of the season and was briefly sidelined by back
spasms. But he has since rounded into form and again looks the part of dominant
starter. Puk throws his fastball in the mid to upper 90s and thanks to the
downhill angle and the excellent extension his 6-foot-7 frame enables him to
get, the pitch plays up even further. Puk’s slider and changeup both could
use further refinement, but both have a chance to develop into average
offerings. His slider sits in the mid-80s with horizontal sweeping action,
though it can sometimes back up. Puk repeats his arm slot well and gets his
torso over his front side consistently. When he stays balanced and online, he
is very difficult for hitters to square up, even if they make contact. He
throws a lot of strikes, particularly for someone of his size, and can locate
his fastball to both sides of the plate. Puk’s overall skillset and body of
work have positioned him to be the first college pitcher drafted, and he has
the potential to become Florida’s first ever No. 1 overall pick.

Despite his stature -- Jefferies is just six-feet tall -- he was moving up
boards at the start of the spring as the most consistent performer among
college pitchers in this Draft class. But after six dominant starts, Jefferies
missed his first start in April with what was originally thought to be a calf
strain. When news circulated that it was actually a shoulder issue, it threw
his Draft status way up in the air.
When healthy, Jefferies uses a compact delivery that helps him bring fastballs
up to 95 mph to the plate. He can add and subtract from his heater, sitting
most comfortably in the low-90s. Jefferies throws his slider across his body,
and it serves as more of a chase pitch right now. He doesn't use his changeup
that much, but it has good sink and has been effective against left-handed
hitters at times. A former shortstop, Jefferies fields his position very well
and is extremely competitive on the mound.
Jefferies did return at the end of May to throw eight scoreless innings over
two outings, which undoubtedly helped point him back in the right direction.
If the medicals check out, a team could still take Jefferies early, thinking he
could be a Mike Leake or Jeremy Hellickson-like undersized right-hander.

2nd rd #47 Logan Shore Florida RHP R/R JR

A.J. Puk might be the more "famous" University of Florida starter, but it's
been Shore who has been the Gators' Friday night starter for all three years of
his college career. He's more about pitchability than stuff, but that's led to
a ton of success in the ultra-competitive SEC.
Strong and durable, Shore is a strike-throwing machine with a potential
three-pitch mix. He typically works with an average fastball velocity-wise, but
it plays up because of his command. His best pitch is his changeup, which he
locates and sinks extremely well. Even when hitters know it's coming, he still
gets outs. Shore's breaking ball is slurvy and a bit inconsistent. When it's
on, it can be virtually unhittable and has the potential of being a third Major
League average offering.
The lack of an explosive fastball limits his ceiling and, as a result, his
Draft stock. There's no question Puk is the first Gator pitcher to go off the
board and some others could pass Shore by because of the fastball, but whatever
team takes Shore will be getting a college performer who should be quick to the
big leagues as a back-end starter.

3nd rd # Sean Murphy Wright State University C R/R JR

Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 50 | Run: 40 | Arm: 70 | Field: 55
| Overall: 45
Murphy generated almost no interest as an Ohio high schooler, going undrafted
in 2013 and getting just one college offer, an opportunity as a preferred
walk-on rather than a scholarship from Wright State. Three years later, he
could become the second-highest pick in Raiders history, trailing only Brian
Anderson, the No. 3 overall choice in 1993 by the Angels.
Murphy could have the strongest arm among the 2016 Draft's catchers, with
multiple evaluators rating it as a 70 on the 20-80 scouting scale. He's more
athletic than most backstops and has the receiving and blocking skills to stay
behind the plate.
His bat speed and strength give Murphy solid power potential from the right
side of the plate. He opened 2016 by homering four times in his first eight
games but cooled off considerably after breaking the hamate in his left hand,
which sidelined him for six weeks. There are some concerns about his hitting
ability because he never has posted big numbers at Wright State and he batted
just .226 with wood in the Cape Cod League last summer.
