The 6-foot-1 right-hander starred for Heritage High School in Brentwood, Calif., and landed with the Chicago Cubs as the 56th-overall pick in the 2012 MLB draft out of high school. The A's had their eye on Blackburn as far back as that draft, bringing him to the Coliseum for a pre-draft workout, but it would be another four years before he would become a part of their organization. 當地人，在2012年選秀會前運動家也對Paul有興趣，不過在前段選秀被小熊挑走。 In the intervening years, Blackburn developed slowly but steadily in the Cubs' chain. He spent the 2012 season in Rookie ball and the 2013 campaign pitching in the short-season Northwest League. In 2014, Blackburn jumped to the Low-A Midwest League, where he posted a solid 3.23 ERA in 117 innings, but struck out only 75 and remained mostly under the prospect radar. He started the 2015 season slowly with High-A Myrtle Beach, but, after missing a month with minor injuries midseason, he posted a 1.33 ERA during the second half of the season. Since joining the A's, Blackburn has continued mostly to find success. His career minor league K/9 is 6.2, a number that would be fine in the big leagues but is lower than most top starting pitching prospects in the minor leagues. Blackburn gets away with that contact-oriented approach by not walking many hitters (2.7 BB/9 for his career) and inducing a lot of groundballs (1.62 GO/AO and a 0.5 HR/9 in his career). Because Blackburn is so fielder-dependent, advanced statistics are never going to project him to find sustained success. But he has defied those projections thus far. His secondary offerings have improved since joining the A's organization. Blanton was a college draft selection, and he moved more quicker through the minor leagues than Blackburn. But they both arrived in the bigs at the same age (23). Blanton's minor- league strikeout numbers were higher than Blackburn's, but Blanton offered a similar skill set as a right-hander with a high-80s/low-90s fastball with plenty of sink, and three usable off-speed pitches. As a starter with the A's from 2004-2008, Blanton posted a 4.25 ERA in 761 innings. He struck out 5.10 per nine innings and walked 2.39 per nine. Blanton was a durable workhorse with Oakland, rarely missing a start. 順利的話，下個Joe Blanton。 Blanton wasn't a star with the A's, but he was a reliable mid-rotation starter who brought plenty of value with his ability to pitch efficiently, work deep in to games (he averaged more than six innings per start) and take the ball every fifth day. Blackburn could give the A's similar value over the next few years.
