(Davidson)
the team had an eye on Davidson much earlier and was "pleasantly surprised"
when he was still available at No. 29...“He’s been on our radar since high
school,We like Logan because he brings value both at the plate and in the
field. He’s a shortstop who has power. We think there’s a lot of upside still
with the bat. He’s a college prospect who’s going to impact the game from
both sides of the plate.”(Cape Cod League)“In a perfect world, he would have
performed better there,” “But our looks in the Cape both years were, we
always came away with a favorable impression.”the A’s “believe in the
power” Davidson showed from both sides in college and: “I think if everything
comes together, you’re hoping he’s productive more in the middle of the
order.”
(Baum)
“We love the combination of athleticism, instincts and stuff. We definitely
like the curveball. It’s a hard, power-type curveball. We think it’s
certainly got out-pitch potential.”
(Smith)
“Super athletic, upside, probably a little more risk, as is true with any high
school player. We really like his swing, he’s an aboveaverage runner and we
think he can play center field.”
(McCann)
“Defensively, McCann really improved, and part of that probably was playing
with Joey,But he’s certainly a bat-first catcher, a ton of power —
top-ofthe-charts raw power, a clutch performer.”
(McColl)
“He had a tremendous year. He’s got power and has a chance to be a very good
defender at first.”

Oakland selected 19 college pitchers, 16 college position players, four high
school position players and one high school pitcher. Of the position players,
10 were infielders, six were outfielders and four were catchers. The
preponderance of collegians wasn’t necessarily unusual for the A’s, Forst
said.Nor did the A’s concentrate primarily on filling a particular positional
void within the organization.“We didn't go into this with any needs or
specific goals,” Forst said. “I'm confident we've added a lot of talent to
the organization over the last three days.”
29) Athletics: Logan Davidson, SS, Clemson
Davidson -- whose father, Mark, played in parts of six season with the Twins
and Astros -- can show you three plus tools in his raw power, speed and arm
strength. He's a little bit of a divisive player, because he's been much more
successful with metal bats at Clemson than he has been with wood bats in summer
play. Nevertheless, he offers a lot of upside as a switch-hitter with those
kind of tools at an up-the-middle position.
A’s: Drew Millas, C, Missouri State, 7th round
A very athletic backstop, Millas is thought to rival Braves first-round pick
Shea Langeliers in terms of defensive prowess. He’s shown some raw pop but
hasn’t swung the bat as consistently. A switch-hitter, he might be better off
just hitting left-handed. Getting a catcher with the glovework to catch in the
big leagues quickly in the seventh round is a good get for the A’s.
Jose Dicochea:“Dicochea has a live arm and a frame that projects to get bigger
as he develops,” Forst said. “We believe he can be developed as a starter who
already has three pitches [fastball, curveball, changeup].”
Patrick McColl: “Patrick had a great senior season. He distinguished himself
as more than just a ‘senior sign,’ said Forst, who is a Harvard graduate
himself.

29 Oakland Athletics Logan Davidson, SS, Clemson
The Athletics love those up the middle players, though Davidson is more like an
up the middle player they would have drafted ten years ago than the last few
years. He is an above average runner, but not the plus runner or elite athlete
they have targeted early on. Instead, he is a top-level college performer with
power and a high walk rate. I think the success his former teammate Seth Beer
has had after struggling with wood bats in the Cape has helped Davidson’s
value this year. The hit tool is the concern, as Davidson profiles as a future
shortstop who can do a bit of everything, but nothing at a high level.
66 Oakland Athletics Tyler Baum, RHP, UNC
The Oakland Athletics continue to draft like its 1999, so let's all party!
Tyler Baum is a college pitcher with a long track record and three years of
steady production. I ended up having him 65th on my final big board, right in
line with where he was drafted. Baum is not the biggest guy, but he shows three
pitches which, at points, are all above average. Baum is not going to win any
awards, but he could fill in at the back of a rotation for a lot of years.

Pick Rank FV FirstNameLastName Position Age School Strengths
29 29 45 Logan Davidson SS 21.5 Clemson frame, power, infield fit
66 102 40 Tyler Baum RHP 21.4 North Carolina velo spike, slight frame
Davidson was drafted where we had him ranked. He was very productive at Clemson
but it always came with strikeouts and he wasn’t great on the Cape with wood
bats, but he’s a switch hitting shortstop with power. Baum’s velo was up in
the last handful of starts to his best velos from high school, and his breaker
was also sharper (92-96, above CB), but he still maintained his command. This
is a good pick if he can keep all those elements together, which some doubt
given his frame and track record.
