[News] 2011 MLB.com's Top 50 Prospects: No. …
Brett Lawrie, 2B
2010 Rank: 26
Drafted: 2008, 1st (16)
ETA in Majors: 2012
Statistically speaking:
As one of the yongest regulars in the Double-A Southern League in 2010,
Lawrie led the league in hits (158), triples (16) and total bases (250),
while tying for the league lead in runs (90).
Scouting report:
Scouts have loved Lawrie's bat ever since he was in the 2008 Draft class,
and that hasn't changed. He's a plus hitter with terrific bat speed that
should allow him to hit for average and continue to develop more power.
He's got good speed and should be able to steal some bases at the big league
level. He'd been playing second and making some progress there, though he'll
never be a Gold Glover. The Jays will have him give third a try, and he's got
the arm to play that position. He's very self-confident and plays the game hard.
Upside potential:
He'll always be an offensive-minded player at whatever position
he's playing, but the bat has the chance to be special.
They said it: "Is he intense? Is he competitive? Yes. He's somebody that
plays the game to win. You're not going to get 25 players that are cut from
the same cloth. But I know one thing -- his work ethic and the way he plays
the game won't be matched." -- Blue Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos
He said it: "It was very exciting for me being a Canadian kid. It's a great
feeling to come back to Canada and have the Canadian flag on my chest again.
It's the first time I've felt welcome in a long time." -- on the trade that
sent him from Milwaukee to Toronto
