[News] 2011 MLB.com's Top 50 Prospects: No. …
Kyle Drabek, RHP
2010 Rank: 17
Drafted: 2006, 1st (18)
ETA in Majors: 2011
Statistically speaking:
In July and August last season, Drabek had about as good a two-month
stretch as a starting pitcher could have. The right-hander went 7-1 with
a 1.92 ERA. He held hitters to a .173 average over 10 starts, striking out
60 in 61 innings, well above his career 7.5 K/9 ratio.
Scouting report:
Ever since high school, Drabek has gotten high marks for his curve ball,
and that's still his best pitch -- a plus breaking ball, and one of the
best in the Minors. His fastball is pretty darn good, too, and he can reach
back for a little extra, up to 95-96 mph, when he needs to. His changeup
still hasn't caught up to the other two pitches, but it's come a long way
and will be an effective third pitch. He also will now wrinkle in a cutter
here and there. He's a very good athlete and is a bulldog of a competitor
on the mound.
Upside potential:
With the potential to have four usable pitches, Drabek has the chance
to front a rotation some day.
They said it: "It is exciting. Watch him grow up, then you're coaching their
young teams and stuff, and to be here in this setting watching him start a
new level of his career is pretty special." -- Former All-Star, and Kyle's
father, Doug Drabek
He said it: "It was a little weird. I didn't expect myself to be this
relaxed. I was coming into it thinking I would be real nervous. So, it was a
little different." -- after his Major League debut
