[News] 2011 MLB.com's Top 50 Prospects: No. …
J.P. Arencibia, C
2010 Rank: NR
Drafted: 2007, 1st (21)
ETA in Majors: 2011
Statistically speaking:
Those who think Arencibia racked up most of his 32 homers and .626 slugging
percentage because of his friendly home confines in Las Vegas might want to
look more closely. He did homer 16 times at home, but he also went deep 16
times away from home -- and he did it in 22 fewer at-bats.
He hit .328/.378/.677 on the road and .276/.343/.581 in Vegas.
Scouting report:
Arencibia is an offensive-minded catcher, though he's not completely
one-dimensional. His best tool is his power, and he can hit the ball out of
the park to all fields. He's not very selective at the plate, though he's not an all-or-nothing type. His bat is ahead of his glove, but
he's got a decent arm and has gotten better with his overall receiving.
Upside potential:
A power-hitting, everyday catcher who hits plenty of homers,
drives in runs and handles his catching chores capably.
They said it: "We do believe J.P. deserves an opportunity to play. How much
[he plays] and the success that he enjoys is up to him and the learning
curve. Those are things we can't predetermine." -- Blue Jays GM Alex
Anthopoulos
He said it: "I'm going to come in doing what I can do, trying to get better
every day and use Spring Training as a tool to learn my pitchers. I think
I've proven, at least at the Minor League level, that I'm ready for the big
leagues. I haven't had an opportunity to do much in Toronto, but in a short
time I think I've learned a lot and I know I'm ready for the next challenge."
