YOUTH REPORT: ARSENAL 2 CHELSEA 0
Posted on: Mon 07 Dec 2009
A travelling Chelsea Under 18s side succumbed to a tough Arsenal team this
weekend, conceding two goals in the final 10 minutes.
It was a Chelsea side missing the influential Billy Knott, who has scored
on several occasions from the left flank this season. He was suspended for
the game.
Despite making several great saves earlier on, Chelsea keeper Aldi Haxhia
was finally beaten by Luke Freeman and Conor Henderson strikes as
tiredness kicked in.
The loss mirrors last season's away meeting with the young Gunners, which
ended 2-0 last October, with Freeman also finding the net on that occasion.
This time Chelsea began the stronger side as Marko Mitrovic broke into the
area for a one-on-one with the keeper, only to see his shot deflected from
danger.
As the visitors continued to attack it was Jacopo Sala who would be next
to see a chance stray wide, this time there was no deflection as
inaccuracy denied the Blues an opener. Despite being an impressive game to
watch, there weren't that many chances on goal during the first half but
within seconds of the restart Chelsea were threatening once more.
It was Mitrovic again as he attacked a clever cross to the near post,
which was saved by the in-form Arsenal goalie.
Next, substitute Aliu Djalo who had replaced the injured Josh McEachran
(pictured) in midfield, had an on-target header tipped inches over the bar
as the Arsenal keeper kept his side in the game.
It was with only 10 minutes left on the clock that the hosts took the lead.
Freeman beat Clifford on the left flank, broke into the box and finally
beat Haxhia who could only watch as the ball slipped over his line.
Within five minutes the lead was doubled. This time a tired Haxhia failed
to hold onto a mediocre Henderson shot and the ball went into the back of
the net. It was a tough ending to a good display from the Blues.
'It was a very good Academy game,' said youth team manager Dermot Drummy
after the game.
'We were really pleased with the side's performance all-in-all. It was a
couple of individual mistakes that cost the game, but the boys were tired
and it was understandable.
'Overall they put in a really good performance,' added Drummy.
