The midfielder also discusses his late summer switch from Anfield to Stamford Bridge and a surprising penchant for the dulcet tones of James Blunt. Given the Portuguese international's distinctive Mohican hairstyle, coupled with a clear fondness for tattoos and body artwork, you could be forgiven for thinking Meireles is a recent graduate from the Billy Bremner school of combative midfield play. But you'd be wrong. 'Maybe my style and how I look is a lot more aggressive than my personality,' he tells Chelsea in the main feature. 'I know people in England like players with a lot of aggression, but I don't think I'm that kind of player. I have a lot of other things that can hopefully help the team out.' Having moved his family down to the capital shortly after his transfer deadline day move, Meireles has been embracing all the weird and wonderful attractions which the city has to offer, but for a man who can talk three different languages there is still one part of London life he is yet to get to grips with. 'I like the lifestyle in London. Everybody has their own style and nobody cares. Cities like this shine because they have lots of people here from different countries. 'How do you say it? Cockney? I don't know, I will ask some of the guys to teach me. The accent here is maybe a little bit easier to understand than in Liverpool.' Unlike the majority of his peers, Meireles was a relatively late starter when it came to actually playing the game. There was no stereotypical 'jumpers for goalposts' tale and even at the age of 15 his career path remained unclear. A spur of the moment decision made by his father, purely in the hope it would keep the youngster entertained and out of trouble essentially turned out to be a life-changing moment, and the midfielder admits that it could have worked out very differently. 'My dad put me into football to pass my time, that's it. I didn't know what football was until he did that but it's turned out quite well,' he said. 'I worked and studied as well. I'm a lucky guy for how it turned out so I make sure I enjoy my football. I was a mechanic. Maybe that's what I'd be doing now if I hadn't become a footballer, but I don't really think about it that much.' Away from the field of play, Meireles is a devoted family man, and while he is residing in a different country he is only too aware of the importance of respecting the values and traditions of others. With the festive season almost upon us, however, he is unlikely to be getting too excited given the fact that he and the rest of the squad will spend Christmas Day preparing for the visit of our west London neighbours Fulham on Boxing Day, as opposed to stuffing their faces with turkey and all the trimmings, although it's unlikely the Meireles clan would be going down that particular route in any case. 'We have black cod at Christmas, that's the tradition in Portugal,' he said. 'I think traditions are important at this time of year which is why I understand we have to play lots of matches in England. It's really good to see all of the families at the matches with the Christmas spirit, and to see people dressed up as Santa.' Delve into Spackman's photo album Former Blues midfielder Nigel Spackman, who enjoyed two different spells at the club, talks Chelsea readers through his photo album, including scoring a memorable penalty against Arsenal during the 1985/86 season, as well as a gruelling pre-season workout at Harlington. Catch up with Gronkjaer The former Danish international, and scorer of a famous goal in the history of the club, talks to Chelsea about coming back to the Bridge as an opponent, a brief flirtation with Gianluca Vialli and the 2002 FA Cup Final defeat to Arsenal. http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/b8/75/0,,10268~10253752,00.jpg
Coe looking ahead Sebastian Coe, in his exclusive column, looks back at the past month while also looking ahead to next summer's Olympic Games, in particular the football part of the competition. Coe feels the fact there is a Great Britain team competing in the football will really capture the imagination of the public and swell interest. Frank talking Frank Lampard's Q&A session at the Annual Lunch is featured on page 53, where the midfielder talks about his love for the club, his desire to surpass Bobby Tambling's goalscoring record and his hopes and aspirations for when he finally hangs his boots up. http://www.chelseafc.com/javaImages/c0/75/0,,10268~10253760,00.jpg
Academy prospect This month, the youngster under the spotlight is Alastair Gordon, who cites John Terry as the player he tries to model his game on. Gordon has been playing at right-back more often than not of late, but his versatility means he is equally comfortable in midfield. Find out how the 16-year-old is progressing on page 54. War is over Somewhat uniquely, the latest edition of the magazinealso examines the impact watching a game of football had in helping people get their lives back on track in the aftermath of World War Two. And there's more As if all of that wasn't enough, Broadcaster Jonny Gould recalls a magical afternoon at Old Trafford and members of the 1984 squad remember lending a hand to help publicise a local production of Cinderella at the Wimbledon Theatre. Keep your eyes peeled for a certain wing wizard dressed as the main character. All this and more in the new edition of Chelsea, priced at £3.25 and available from the Megastore and all good newsagents. -- http://fanchants.com/football-songs/chelsea-chants/when-the-blues-go-steaming/ Zigger Zagger Zigger Zagger (oi, oi, oi) Ziiiiiigga (oi), Zaaaaaga (oi), Zigger Zagger Zigger Zagger (oi, oi, oi) Oh when The Blues, Go steaming in, Oh when The Blues go steaming in, I wanna be in that number, Oh when The Blues go steaming in.. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 114.47.3.153
