Solanke scored twice as England strengthened their chances of making the semi-finals with a 4-1 victory over Turkey. Brown returned to the side after missing the opening win over Malta through suspension and began on the left flank, while schoolboy striker Solanke, the squad's youngest outfield player, continued in a no.10 role just behind the striker. The young Three Lions started brightly and Brown saw an effort blocked well, before they fell behind after a quarter of an hour. However, parity was quickly restored as Solanke added to his five goals in qualification with the equaliser, finishing neatly with his left foot on the turn after a great run down the right by centre-back Joe Gomez. Turkey found themselves down to 10 men on the stroke of half-time and England went ahead nine minutes after the restart as Solanke was on hand again from close range, showing wonderful composure to adjust his feet and finish beyond the goalkeeper from eight yards out. It was the striker's 29th goal of an outstanding campaign for club and country. Brown also caused problems, testing the Turkish goalkeeper on numerous occasions as England capitalised on their numerical advantage and added further goals through Everton defender Jonjoe Kenny and Newcastle striker Adam Armstrong. Solanke was withdrawn with 15 minutes remaining, with England 4-1 up and his job comprehensively done, while Brown completed 90 minutes. England's place in the semi-finals will be confirmed later this afternoon unless hosts Malta beat Netherlands in the other Group A encounter. The team's final group game takes place on Thursday against Netherlands. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/news-article/article/3833222/ BROWN FEATURES IN YOUNG ENGLAND LOSS Posted on: Thu 15 May 2014 Izzy Brown played the whole of England Under-17's 2-0 loss to the Netherlands today (Thursday) in their final group game of the Under-17 European Championships. Dominic Solanke, who netted twice in England's 4-1 victory over Turkey on Monday, was an unused substitute. Both teams had already qualified for the semi-final stage so the result determined that the Netherlands will finish top of the group. England are likely to face Portugal in the last four. Brown started up front but moved to a wide left position midway through the second period as England sought to reverse a goal deficit, given to the Netherlands by a stunning long-range strike from central defender Calvin Verdonk. Despite attacking changes from manager John Peacock, who had made seven pre-match alterations from the team that beat Turkey earlier in the week, it was the Netherlands who got the game's crucial second goal with 12 minutes remaining through Dani van der Moot. They were able to see the game out in relative comfort although it took a brave stop from the Dutch keeper to deny Brown as he hared down on goal. The other group's final games are later today with Portugal and Scotland in prime position to qualify. England's youngster will play the top-placed team in a semi-final on Sunday. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/news-article/article/3839791/ SOLANKE SCORES FOR FINAL-BOUND YOUNG ENGLAND Posted on: Sun 18 May 2014 Chelsea Academy striker Dominic Solanke netted his third goal of the European Under-17s Championship finals as England beat Portugal 2-0 in Sunday's semi-final. Both Solanke and Izzy Brown played the full game as the young England side bounced back from defeat in their final group game against Netherlands, and they will now contest Wednesday's final against the Dutch who beat Scotland 5-0 in the other semi. Sixteen-year-old Solanke, who scored twice in Chelsea's FA Youth Cup final win earlier in the month, opened the England scoring in Malta on 52 minutes, controlling and finishing in style from a pass over the top of the defence. He had begun the match in a wide position but moved to centre-forward in the first half when Newcastle United's Adam Armstrong went off injured. Fulham's Patrick Roberts, who also scored the FA Youth Cup final, doubled the advantage on 72 minutes against a Portuguese side who hit woodwork three times in the first half. England coach John Peacock made seven changes to his team selection from the Dutch defeat, reverting to the one that beat Turkey 4-1 in the second group game. They beat hosts Malta 3-0 in the opener. England have won this competition once since it became for Under-17 sides in 2002. That was in 2010 with a side containing Josh McEachran and Nathaniel Chalobah. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- http://www.chelseafc.com/news-article/article/3843802/ INTERNATIONALS: CHALOBAH HELPS YOUNG ENGLAND EXTEND LEAD Posted on: Mon 19 May 2014 Nathaniel Chalobah played the full game as England Under-21s beat Wales U21s to close in on a place in the qualification play-offs for the 2015 European Championships. The result in Swansea was 3-1 with Norwich's Nathan Redmond scoring all of England's goals. Wales equalised two minutes after the 18th-minute opener but Gareth Southgate's side were back ahead by the break and completed the scoring in stoppage time at the end of the game. Josh McEachran was not involved but Chalobah, who has been on loan at Middlesbrough, played in a midfield role. Having won seven and drawn one of their qualifiers, England with two group games left to play have a nine-point lead over Moldova who have three games left, but their far inferior goal difference makes England firm favourites to progress to the play-off stage. The squad coached by Southgate with Steve Holland as his assistant now travel to southern France to take part in the Toulon Tournament, where they will play in a group stage against Under-21 teams from Brazil, Colombia, South Korea and Qatar, who they face in their first game on Thursday.
