Our Under-18s ended the season with a win on their travels on Saturday
afternoon. The young Blues, who had beaten Aston Villa 12-2 and 8-3
already this season, made it three away victories from three in the elite
playoff round as Miro Muheim and Mukhtar Ali got on the scoresheet.
Muheim opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark before Ali doubled
the advantage three minutes later as Joe Edwards's side went in 2-0 up at
the break. Muheim then got his second after the restart as the visitors
ended a successful campaign on a high.
== Team news ==
There were two changes to the side that drew 3-3 with Manchester City a
week previously as Under-16s Cole Dasilva and Mason Mount started. Jared
Thompson kept his place in goal protected by a back three of Josh Grant,
captain Ruben Sammut and Trevoh Chalobah.
Dasilva operated at left wing-back, with Wakefield in the same role on the
right and the pairing of Kyle Scott and Ali in central midfield. Mount and
Isaac Christie-Davies provided the central attacking support for Muheim up
front.
== First half ==
The Blues started brightly in Birmingham as schoolboy Mount's effort was
deflected behind and then, from the following corner, his strike from the
edge of the box was headed clear off the line. At the other end, Thompson
twice saved well at his near post as the hosts indicated their threat.
Swiss youth international Muheim bagged the opener after 34 minutes,
picking up the ball from Scott before jinking one way, then the other and
beating home goalkeeper Dylan Forth with a powerful left-footed strike
from 15 yards.
The striker came close to doubling his tally as he flicked his boot
instinctively at a corner from the left that dropped dangerously towards
the near post, however the effort flew straight at the goalkeeper. Yet the
Blues didn't have to wait long for a second goal as Ali's low drive crept
into the bottom corner beyond the despairing dive of Forth to take the
midfielder on to half a dozen goals for the season.
Forth saved well from Scott after the midfield man had swapped a clever
one-two with Ali as Chelsea went in comfortably ahead at the interval.
== Second half ==
Forth palmed away a drive from the lively Mount shortly after the restart
before Nathan Baxter, a half-time replacement for Thompson in the Chelsea
goal, made an impressive stop to tip Rushian Hepburn-Murphy's strike over
the bar.
Mount skewed a shot wide of the near post while Villa substitute Mustafa
Zeidan fired straight at Baxter when positioned well as he bore down on
goal. Muheim bagged his 11th goal of his first season in English football
shortly after the hour mark as he finished confidently from close range
after a perfect delivery from Wakefield and he almost completed his
hat-trick shortly after as his brilliant bending effort was expertly
pushed over by Forth.
Hepburn-Murphy looked the most likely of the Villa forwards to find the
back of the net and he again brought a routine save from Baxter late on,
while Wakefield saw a shot charged down and Ali's free-kick was gathered
comfortably.
After topping the southern section of the league and winning the FA Youth
Cup, the Blues end the playoff campaign in third place, three points
behind winners Middlesbrough.
== Manager reaction ==
Joe Edwards was pleased his side continued their strong end to the
campaign as they won away from home again. Speaking to the official
Chelsea website after the game, he said: 'We didn't have much to play for
today in terms of points but we wanted to finish the season with a good
performance.
'We had to show a good mentality because we've obviously beaten Villa
quite comfortably twice already this season and we didn't want to see
complacency slip in. We've been playing well for a few weeks now and
continued that by taking control of the game early on.
'I thought we showed good discipline throughout. Kyle Scott looked very
sharp and drove the team from midfield. To finish the season with a clean
sheet is nice, with a young team again, so it's a good finish to a good
season for this season and it bodes well for next season for some of the
younger boys.'
Away from the game, Edwards also offered words of encouragement to
defender George Brady, who left the club last week.
'George and the club decided it was in his best interests to continue his
career elsewhere. Obviously we'd like to wish him all the best now moving
forward,' Edwards said.
