Under-18s report: Chelsea 3 Arsenal 1
Tue 9 May 2017
Our Under-18s can replicate the senior side and lift the league title with
victory on Friday following a significant London derby win at Cobham.
Cole Dasilva's left-footed strike and Trevoh Chalobah's header put Jody
Morris's side in front at the break but Eddie Nketiah's reply ensured a
nervy and battling second half was in store for the hosts. They defended
resolutely and struck the decisive third goal 12 minutes from time through
substitute Martell Taylor-Crossdale's powerful low finish.
The result means the Blues leapfrog Arsenal to the top of the elite merit
group. A victory against Reading this Friday 12 May at Cobham will see our
youngsters crowned national champions for the first time in 33 years and
secure a remarkable Treble.
Morris made three changes from his side's 1-0 victory away at Liverpool 10
days previously as Marcin Bulka, Chalobah and Mason Mount came into the
starting team. The Blues were missing five players involved for England
and the Netherlands at the Under-17 European Championship, though
development squad regulars Dujon Sterling, Ike Ugbo, Chalobah and Mount
bolstered the ranks.
Arsenal fielded four players who featured in their PL2 outing the previous
evening but it was the hosts who settled quickest in a significant clash
at the top of the Under-18 Premier League elite merit group. The Gunners
could seal the title with a first win at Cobham since 2011, while Chelsea
needed a victory to wrestle back control in the title race ahead of their
final game of the season later in the week.
A pair of headers threatened early on for the hosts as Harvey St Clair and
Chalobah got on the end of corners from Mount before we drew first blood
in the derby with 10 minutes on the clock. The attack came down the right
flank as Sterling delivered into the centre and Dasilva latched on to the
cross from his fellow wing-back, firing left-footed past Joao Virginia via
the inside of the post.
It was a deserved advantage after a bright opening but the visitors slowly
grew into the encounter as the half progressed. Nketiah fired straight at
Bulka before Reiss Nelson curled a free-kick inches wide of the far post
from the very edge of the 18-yard box. Sterling continued to threaten down
the right flank for Morris's men and Virginia was required to think and
act fast as he raced off his line to thwart the rampaging 17-year-old's
progress into the area.
Yet it was the Gunners, unbeaten in the elite round, demonstrating an
increasing likelihood of drawing the scores level. It looked like Joe
Willock might take that opportunity when the ball fell at his feet in the
box but Chalobah produced an impressive diving block to divert the
forward's shot behind.
Nelson and Nketiah took aim at goal without troubling Bulka and their
inability to seriously test the Polish goalkeeper was punished before the
break. Sterling provided a warning sign with a low shot that was saved
well by Virginia at the near post but our lead was soon extended moments
later. It was a goal crafted from pure simplicity as Mount swung in a
corner from the right and Chalobah's thumping header at the near post
diverted the ball in for 2-0.
Opportunities continued to be fashioned down both ends before the
interval. Chalobah made another super block to deny Donyell Malen from
close range before Ugbo beat the goalkeeper to reach a pass over the top
but his shot at goal was blocked by Joseph Olowu. Mount fired narrowly
wide before Arsenal had the ball in the back of the net following sloppy
play out from the back by the hosts. However, Nketiah had crept a yard
offside when Nelson played the ball across for a tap-in and the linesman
was correct in ruling the goal out.
The Chelsea advantage was halved within five minutes of the restart as
Arsenal hunted for a point that would maintain their position at the top
of the league. Nketiah was the goalscorer, poking the ball past Bulka from
close range after Willock had delivered from the right byline.
It was a goal that set the tone for the second half, the visitors pushing
for a leveller and the hosts working hard to stay in front. Josh Grant had
replaced Sterling at the break and Luke McCormick's arrival soon followed
the Gunners goal as Morris tried to stem the flow of Arsenal attacks.
Bulka saved from substitute Vlad Dragomir before the Romanian spurned a
great opportunity from a right-sided cross, volleying narrowly over the
crossbar.
Dragomir then flashed a header off-target but sights at Bulka's goal were
limited as we kept the Gunners at bay for long periods. The nerves were
calmed after 78 minutes as substitute Taylor-Crossdale struck his 21st
goal of the campaign, drilling a low effort inside the near post from just
inside the box.
It secured another three points for our youngsters, who can finish the
week with a third trophy of the season. Reading are hosted at Cobham on
Friday evening, kick-off at 6pm and live on Chelsea TV.

Under-18s reaction: Title in sight
Wed 10 May 2017
The scene is set for a celebratory Friday this week as our Under-18s look
to seal the national title with victory against Reading at Cobham, hours
before Antonio Conte's senior side head to West Brom searching for a win
that crowns them Premier League champions.
Jody Morris's youngsters seized the initiative in the Under-18 Premier
League title race with a 3-1 win over Arsenal that saw the young Blues
leapfrog the Gunners into top spot with one game of the campaign
remaining. Cole Dasilva, Trevoh Chalobah and Martell Taylor-Crossdale were
on the scoresheet for the hosts, who are now one win away from completing
a remarkable Treble following triumphs in the FA Youth Cup and Under-18
Premier League south section already this term.
In the aftermath of a significant London derby three points, Morris
reflected on a battling display from his young charges.
'In the first half we played some really good football and were the better
team but Arsenal upped it a bit after half-time,' he told the official
Chelsea website. 'We started to turn the ball over too often, which gave
them an opportunity to take more control and put us under pressure. We
looked anxious but we defended better after they scored and the boys
showed a different side to their game.
'It was backs-to-the-wall for spells in the second half but you could see
how much winning this competition means to our players, how much beating
Arsenal means to them and how much defending our unbeaten run at home
means to them. I was just as proud of that as I have been with other, more
dominant performances this season.'
The Blues are now unbeaten at Cobham in 31 league matches, a run
stretching back to April 2015, and have amassed more league points than in
any campaign in over 15 years. They are aiming to be crowned national
champions for the first time since 1984, a pressure Morris feels is
driving his players on in these final weeks of the campaign.
'You can understand the nerves because ultimately we're trying to win a
Treble and that's something our Academy has never achieved before,' the
manager continued. 'You always feel the pressure in the Youth Cup but we
made it clear right from the start of the season that this competition and
the southern section were just as important for us. We haven't won the
league since 1984 and that brings its own pressure. The fact we started
the day a point behind Arsenal as well means you can understand young
players getting a bit nervy and sitting back to protect the lead.
'There was some fantastic distance covered from our midfielders – Jacob
Maddox was outstanding again, while Mason Mount and Conor Gallagher got
across so much ground. We were putting our bodies on the line and that was
pleasing to see too because that's what every player is going to have to
do if they want professional careers in football.'
Reading are hosted on Friday in a 6pm kick-off which supporters can watch
live on Chelsea TV before our Premier League action in the Midlands. With
little time for recovery or preparation in between the games this week,
Morris has urged his players to make every effort to get themselves in
peak physical condition for one final push for silverware.
'It could be an unbelievable day for the club but the point we made to the
boys straight away in the dressing room was to make sure we start
recovering and resting because in three days we have to play again.
There's no point getting a result like this and a result away at Liverpool
if you're going to drop points against Reading and lose the title on the
final day.
'We did exactly the same after winning the Youth Cup. We were preparing
for the trip to Liverpool the next day and it's the same now. We've got a
couple of knocks so we could be a little thin on Friday but you have to
cope with those challenges throughout a season if you want to win the
league and we know that.'
