Derrick Rose, who famously avoided trying to recruit LeBron James to Chicago four years ago, was part of the Bulls contingent that met with Anthony on Tuesday, the first day of the free agent recruiting period. Rose, Joakim Noah and Taj Gibson all had some type of contact with Anthony, who visited the Bulls on Tuesday and plans to travel to Texas for Wednesday meetings with both the Rockets and Mavericks. Anthony will meet with the Lakers on Thursday in Los Angeles. Gibson's presence is also significant because it has previously been reported that the Bulls would attempt to trade Gibson in order to create additional salary-cap space for Anthony. However, the Bulls stressed to Anthony that in order to be a legitimate title contender it is important for the club to retain both Gibson and Jimmy Butler. According to a source, Anthony wants both players to stay even if it means that Anthony will have to sign for significantly less than the maximum the Knicks can offer, $129 million over five years. Coincidentally, the Knicks essentially gutted their roster to acquire Anthony from the Denver Nuggets in February of 2011, and Anthony realizes that he would have to make financial sacrifices if he wants to pursue a title with the Bulls. Anthony traveled to the Bulls’ home court at the United Center with Chicago head coach Tom Thibodeau and was greeted with banners of himself Photo-shopped wearing a Bulls No. 7 uniform. The marquee also showed the image of the Larry O'Brien Trophy as a way to stress to Anthony that his best route to a championship begins in Chicago. It is believed that the Bulls are the Knicks’ main competition for Anthony. For one, signing with the Bulls would keep Anthony in the Eastern Conference, while signing with the Rockets, Mavs or Lakers would place him in the highly competitive Western Conference. If Anthony joined the Bulls, they and the Miami Heat would be regarded as the two favorites in the East. Thibodeau's presence also aids the Bulls since the coach is long-time friends with Anthony's agent, Leon Rose, who is accompanying Anthony on his free agent trips. Thibodeau has also received strong endorsements from Anthony's former college coach and confidant, Syracuse’s Jim Boeheim. The Bulls gave Anthony a tour of their brand new training facility, which is being built across the street from the United Center. Anthony was said to be impressed by the state-of-the art facility but is more intrigued by the idea that the Bulls can compete for a title right away. A source close to Anthony maintains that he is reluctant to spend another year rebuilding, especially after the Knicks won just 37 games last season. It was first time Anthony failed to make the playoffs. Knicks president Phil Jackson is making attempts to upgrade the roster, and the addition of point guard Jose Calderon was a step in the right direction. There is also a long-shot possibility of Jackson signing Pau Gasol, assuming the veteran is willing to take a $15 million pay cut. Still, the Knicks’ leverage right now is their ability to offer Anthony the largest contract in franchise history while the most any other team can offer is $96 million over four years. Rose's health is a concern for Anthony since Rose has appeared in just 50 games over the past three season following two knee surgeries.
