Q. What happened in this match? Tell us about it.
GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, actually, I think that I was facing a very strong
opponent, and I think that he confirmed today what a good player he is.
He's extremely confident. He was putting shots in all the corners. He was
playing very, very well, and I couldn't manage to push him to the back of
the court.
The balls were a bit heavy. I had an opportunity to win that third set.
I had a set point. I think that the match was partly decided on that point.
As I said the other day, I knew that I had to improve my level if I wanted
to go further. I faced an excellent player today, and I couldn't use any of
the opportunities I had. He was a very good player and he beat me today.
Q. What about the tournament at large?
GUILLERMO CORIA: I'm a bit disappointed because I was hoping for something
better. But I think that overall the people who are working with me knew
that I wasn't playing very well, and it would be very difficult to go to
the end.
I'm not playing at the same level as last year, so, as I was saying, I'm
disappointed, but on the other hand I knew that this was the kind of thing
that could happen.
Q. It was a strange afternoon. The two finalists are out in 25 minutes.
GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, that's not what I have in mind. I think that we've
both lost to good players. We need to keep working. It's not that we've been
beaten by totally unknown players. The way the tour is at the present moment,
that is the kind of thing that can happen.
We've had good results, but I have to be at the top all the time. I try to
work as much as possible to be at my best level. I did what I could, and I
have nothing to regret because I lost to a very good player.
That's what happened.
Q. What is your feeling on leaving this tournament? Disappointment?
GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, I'm sad, obviously. But if you've been beaten by a
good player who's playing well, and he took risks on the set points in my
favor and won those points, there's nothing to be angry about. I accept that
I haven't been playing my best tennis, and I was facing a player who didn't
give me much opportunity. He used every opportunity. He played a wonderful
tiebreak, and it was very difficult for me to pass him.
Q. At 5-3, there was a serve. How did you feel that?
GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, he took a risk on my serve, and it worked well for
him. Then I did a double-fault. I thought about it perhaps too much, and I
made that mistake.
But I continued to play, and he really pushed me all the time. I was never
completely at ease in this match, and I think he won it fairly. It's not
that I lost it because I was nervous or anything; I played as I could, and
he won.
Q. You said that you would be happy to be into the second week. Are you more
disappointed with the way that you've lost this match, or why are you sad and
disappointed?
GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, no one likes to lose in a place where you feel so
well, and in the fourth round.
But I knew it would be very difficult to win today. And even in the following
match, I would have had to play extremely well to win. I knew that I wasn't
at that level.
Q. Last year you said that you would prepare for this French Open extremely
well. What about next year?
GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, I had a problem with my shoulder this year, and I lost
a number of months of training. I never realized -- I never thought that I
would be among the top seeds, and that was my first objective - to be among
the top seeds here in this tournament. I managed to get there, and now I am
going to start thinking about the grass court season and the Davis Cup.
Q. Apart from your shoulder and your recovery, next year, thinking about your
season, would you do the same thing, or would you change tournaments? Do you
regret anything?
GUILLERMO CORIA: No, I don't regret having participated in those tournaments
because I needed to play matches and I needed confidence. I recovered
confidence during the season and I was feeling well, I was feeling fit,
and that was very important. So I don't regret the participation in these
tournaments.
Everything that we did with my team was thinking about the French Open, but
also, all the important tournaments that I've been playing.
Part of your mind is always set on the major tournaments, but I always took
it a match at a time wherever I was. And I get here fit, but my game was not
up to scratch. I think that I was not able to develop the game as I played in
the final in Rome against Nadal, which was my best match. But that's the kind
of thing that happens, and I will have to continue working.
Q. Do you intend to play in Wimbledon, or haven't you decided yet?
GUILLERMO CORIA: Yes, s'Hertogenbosch as well.
Q. What about the rest of the year, do you still set objectives on results
for the second half of this year?
GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, I think I am going to think about the Davis Cup, which
is very important, because we have a difficult challenge. But it's a nice
thing to play, and I would love to be with the team and to adapt to the
surface. It's very important for me.
And of course the Masters. Of course I will try to do my best to reach
Shanghai. It's a place I'd like to know and do well in.
Q. Are you going to play on clay, or are you going to play on other surfaces
to prepare for Shanghai?
GUILLERMO CORIA: I'm in Umag and Sopot. I would like to play those two
tournaments because I need to get points for the ranking, and then I will
move on to the hard court.
Q. At times we got the feeling that you weren't taking too many risks in the
match; that you were just putting the ball back in court. Does this have
anything to do with the fact that you weren't playing your best tennis?
GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, each player has a different style against different
opponents. I was trying to play deep balls because I thought that that was
what would create problems for him. So I tried different types of shots,
but it didn't really work very well. The balls were very heavy and it was
difficult for me to play deep.
But that was my tactic. It didn't work. Everything that I was doing, he just
sent the ball back, and he was on every shot.
Q. You changed coaches three times last year. Are you going to keep your
team this year?
GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, I'm very happy with them. The results that I've been
getting are very positive, so I don't think there's anything to change. We've
been working hard. We've done our best to ensure that I would be ready for
this tournament.
So it's not because I lost that I'm going to change my team; I'm very
comfortable with them. Even if I hadn't won this match, I'm feeling well
and I'm happy with my team.
Q. Do you still bet on Federer, Nadal, or do you also bet on Davydenko now?
GUILLERMO CORIA: Well, if he plays like he played against me today, he would
certainly be a serious candidate. But we'll have to see if he can keep it up
to the end of the tournament. There's still two Argentines, Safin, Robredo,
two specialists. There's still a lot of matches to play.
Federer has a slight advantage in terms of managing pressure, and Nadal
because of his recent results. So it's still very open, I would say.
