Coria wanted 'to kill' Hewitt
By Robert Smith
July 15, 2005
ARGENTINA'S Guillermo Coria said he felt like killing Lleyton Hewitt after a
combustible opening singles match in which insults were traded like volleys
after their Davis Cup World Group tennis quarter-final today.
The world No.2 won a feisty 173-minute duel, 7-6 6-1 1-6 6-2 to give
Australia an early edge in what is shaping up to be a bitterly-contested tie.
Coria launched into an amazing tirade against Hewitt, claiming the Australian
abused him and his captain Alberto Mancini.
"As a person outside the game it's one thing, but on the court I really felt
like killing him," Coria said through an interpreter at his post-match press
conference.
"He can be the best player in the world, he can win every tournament but he
cannot behave the way he does, abusing the captain, abusing the other
players, abusing everyone. I won't repeat what I heard out there."
Hewitt, who has been criticised for bad sportsmanship and cheering his
opponents' mistakes, countered by saying he did not abuse Coria.
"If the worse thing I do is say 'come on' out on the court, I don't think
it's that bad compared to the guy spitting in the referee's direction when he
wasn't happy with the call," Hewitt said.
"He wasn't happy with the court surface, and he tried hip-and-shouldering
(bumping) me at the end of the first set and he complained the whole day, I'm
not quite sure what his issue is.
"I abused him? I didn't say one thing to him for the whole match. I asked him
at one stage when he was grabbing his private parts at me, numerous times,
and I asked him if he had an issue."
Hewitt was particularly incensed by Mancini's actions during the match.
"The worst thing for me was that their captain who has been mouthing off all
week about sportsmanship, the whole time he's over talking to the referee
every second point on my service games. Now, if that's sportsmanship I'll run
to China, that is absolute rubbish."
In an extraordinary outburst, Coria went after Hewitt, reopening old wounds
that first surfaced during the Australian Open with on court incidents with
Argentineans Juan Ignacio Chela and Nalbandian in Melbourne last January.
"(Spaniard) Rafael Nadal jumps and does a lot of gestures on the court, but
he doesn't celebrate your own mistakes. Whereas Lleyton cheers for other
peoples' mistakes and he's very aggressive," Coria said.
"It's very difficult not to feel provoked and not to get into his game, but
as a person I would rather not to win a single tournament in my life and be
like him."
Coria was also scathing about the drop-in grasscourt, which was damp at one
shadowed end and forced play to start half an hour later than scheduled to
enable it to dry out.
"It was a disaster, if it happened in Argentina, the International Tennis
Federation would create problems for us," Coria said.
"The court was very damp, I'm sure the Australians feel exactly the same way
as we do about the surface and in a normal tournament this wouldn't be
allowed.
"It doesn't even look like Wimbledon, not even the training ground.
"But let me emphasise, I did not lose because of that, and if we lose the tie
it won't be because of that, we're not making any excuses, let's make that
quite clear."
Hewitt returned fire, calling Coria's "needling" performance as dumb.
"I'm still struggling to deal with what I actually did wrong. To be perfectly
honest, he's arrogant, and he lost the match today and he's looking for every
excuse in the book. He's a sore loser," Hewitt said.
"It didn't feel like a tennis match, but it was dumb by them. Very rarely
have I lost matches when people try to get into my face.
"What Chela did (spitting) at the Australian Open was disgraceful and it's
carried on and I don't think David Nalbandian is the cleanest guy about the
hip and shoulder (bump) at the Australian Open. He caused that situation at
the Australian Open and he tried to act dumbfounded after the match."
