David Nalbandian has steered Argentina to victory in the
suspended second singles rubber of the Davis Cup by BNP
Paribas quarterfinal tie against Australia defeating Wayne
Arthurs 63 76(8) 57 62 in just over three hours. The tie
now stands at 1-1.
"It was very tough yesterday and today I came back and
played very good," said Nalbandian. "Now we have to win the
doubles.
"For Davis Cup we are ready to do anything. I'll be ready
for the doubles and for tomorrow with the reverse singles."
The match was suspended the previous evening when dew was
making the grass court at the Sydney International Tennis
Centre slippery. Argentina was leading by two sets to one
when the match - which had been interrupted for 90 minutes
after the second set because of rain - was suspended.
Returning to the court in glorious sunshine today,
Nalbandian got the visitors off to a quick start by
breaking the Australian's serve in the third game, Arthurs
hitting three double faults.
The Argentine reapplied the pressure in the seventh game
when, on break point three, he sent up a perfect topspin
lob that landed a metre inside the baseline. Arthurs had
been crowding the net and there was no way that he was able
to chase down the ball.
Nalbandian brought up two match points when he served to
level the series, but he needed just one of them as Arthurs
sent a backhand into the bottom of the net.
Nalbandian made an impressive start against Athurs on
Friday, breaking the Australian’s serve in the first game
of the match. Even though Arthurs pressed the Argentine on
a few occasion in the first set, he was not able to get the
break back and that allowed Nalbandian to gain the early
advantage.
Despite the score there had been little between the two in
the first set, and the tennis was even tighter in the
second with the set going to a tiebreak. Nalbandian closed
out the second set 10-8 in the tiebreak, at which point
play was stopped due to light rain. When the players
returned 90 minutes later, the match continued under lights.
Arthurs broke serve in the second game of the fourth set to
lead 2-0 but the Argentine struck right back a game later.
Then in the eleventh game the Australian was put under
pressure when he had to save three break points, doing so
with some deep serves. It seemed to lift Arthurs’ spirits
because he had Nalbandian at 0-40 in the next game and with
a brilliant backhand cross court volley winner sealed the
set. The match was then suspended because the evening air
was making the court slippery and unplayable.
With the tie now level at 1-1 Arthurs and Nalbandian return
to the court in the doubles rubber – Arthurs teaming with
Lleyton Hewitt and Nalbandian with Mariano Puerta.
