For this reason they're probably getting the steepest of offers, because they can afford it. Package Offer #1: All five. Package Offer #2: One of the pitchers, Robinson Cano and the two position players. Coal-raking? Yes. Likely? Probably not, but that's okay because there will be better offers from elsewhere. Frankly, this is the kind of offer I believe the Twins need to receive in order to trade Johan. An offer that makes you think "Hmmm, I guess this is okay" isn't good enough. Each team in play is going to be willing to give up quite a bit to earn Santana, and one of those teams will have to do something to make the Twins lean in their direction. This is the kind of player whose winning offer should blow your socks off, bottom line. Additionally, the Twins don't NEED to trade Johan at this juncture. There's always the possibility of an extension and trade down the line. Only the young Martinez didn't see time in The Show last fall; the cavalry has already been called, there is no more help for the Mets. This could make them extremely reluctant to part with a number of these players, which could make them difficult partners in a swap the magnitude of Santana's. Package #1: David Wright and Fernando Martinez. Package #2: Milledge, Gomez, Pelfrey and Martinez. Swapping out Pelfrey for Humber is fine; cutting Martinez out of package #2 makes it much more realistic and a little less appealing from the Twins angle. I realize I'm expecting a lot, but I should hope that Minnesota would be asking other teams to make difficult decisions as well. David Wright is as untouchable as you can get...but it's also Johan freaking Santana. All four have good ceilings, are young and will remain affordable for Minnesota in the near future. More importantly, the position players are offensive performers at positions of need for the Twins. Of the three teams I've scourged so far, the Dodgers are by far the best fit. Not only are they a financial heavyweight who can absorb Santana with a smile, they also have young but MLB-ready position player talent. For a team ruled by the dollar, the Twins should be taking a long hard look to Los Angeles if they decide trading Johan is the best way to go.
