NI'S DEBUT:
Porcello was relieved with one out in the fifth by lefty Fu-Te Ni, who
made his big-league debut. Ni began by fanning Giambi on a 0-2 pitch
(after several fouls). In his 1 2/3 innings, he fanned three and yielded
one run on one hit -- a homer by Ryan Sweeney.
Porcello, who made his big-league debut less than three months ago,
said, “Watching his big-league debut, and (Alfredo) Figaro’s a few weeks
ago, it’s cool because very recently I went through the same thing they
did. It’s fun to be there and see it because you know what it’s doing
for their lives and how excited they must be.
“It was fun to watch him, and he threw the ball well.”
Ni, it seems, might be a bit of a perfectionist. Through his translator,
he said he wasn’t that thrilled with his outing, despite the strikeouts.
“Not only the home run, but I didn’t throw the ball to the location the
catcher wanted,” Ni said.

Rookie Fu-Te Ni makes striking debut
Tom Gage / The Detroit News
Oakland, Calif. --
Jason Giambi has hit 406 home runs in his career, 100 of them against
left-handed pitchers.
So to strike out Giambi on Monday night as the first batter he faced in
his major-league career must have felt pretty good to Tigers' left-hander
Fu-Te Ni.
It did.
But because it was a strikeout -- not because it came against a proven
power hitter whose name he's known a long time. In fact, the rookie from
Taiwan had never heard of Giambi.
"He doesn't know him," Ni's interpreter said.
But the strikeout ball is going on a shelf at home all the same -- the
shelf that his father, Jin-Chi Ni, is making to hold his son's memorabilia.
Through his interpreter, Ni said he was both nervous and excited about
his debut in the Tigers' 7-1 defeat to the Oakland A's.
He struck out three in 1 2/3 innings and allowed a run on Ryan Sweeney's solo
home run, but all in all, it wasn't a bad debut.
"He did fine," manager Jim Leyland said. "He got his feet wet in the big
leagues and I'm happy for him.
"I thought he was halfway impressive. He threw strikes, had pretty good
velocity and his breaking ball was better than it looked in spring training.
He'll be OK."
