The biggest splash could potentially be Bonzi Wells' surprise signing
to a two-year contract. He languished all summer waiting for a big payday
that never came, and now he has the chance to join the likes of Jerry
Stackhouse and Shareef Abdur-Rahim as former number one options in contention
for the Sixth Man of the Year award. I think this summer was very sobering
for Wells in terms of realizing his actual value around the league and now
he knows the extent to which he is going to have to rehab it if he
wants to land one more big payday before he retires.
His ability to score the ball and rebound will help the Rockets tremendously
as they lack in both areas, and it's up to Bonzi himself if he can keep his
ego in check long enough to have a positive leadership role in the locker
room as well. Bonzi is the type of player who never seems to miss the
playoffs no matter what team he's on, and with so many performance issues
surrounding this team, they could definitely use his experience as they try
to find some measure of identity this season.
