If there’s one Timberwolves player who is a staple of the LifeTime Fitness
Training Center’s weight room, it’s center Nikola Pekovic. It’s one of his
favorite spots to be.
去一趟標靶中心的重訓室,勢必看得到 Pekovic 的身影,那是他最愛去的地方之一。
“I can’t really explain it,” Pekovic said. “I just like it. I just like
being in the weight room. I just feel really comfortable.”

Much of Pekovic’s strength on the court comes from his tireless workout
routine, which stretches year-round. Whether he’s training during the summer
in Montenegro—he built his father a house in his native country, equipped with
a weight room—or training in Minnesota during the season, Pekovic is always
trying to challenge himself and improve his strength.

He came back to camp this year eight pounds lighter, though his body is much
leaner and, it appears, even stronger than a year ago.

He began lifting weights when he was 17 or 18 years old, and it was an activity
that not only helped prepare him for a career in basketball but also became a
natural, enjoyable pastime. He said he’s always worked with a structured
routine, even now working with strength and conditioning coach Keke Lyles to
find the optimal workout for whatever part of the calendar year he’s in.

His workouts tone down during the regular season due to fatigue of the NBA
schedule, but that doesn’t mean he’s not visible hitting the weights after
practice.

“Every day is a challenge,” Pekovic said. “For me, every day is a challenge
on the court, in the weight room. Whatever I’m doing, every day is a
challenge.

It was a message the coaching staff and trainers preached to Pekovic as he left
Minnesota last season. Already set to undergo surgery for bone spurs in his
right ankle in May, the Wolves’ staff made it clear in order to stay healthy
in an 82-game season where he’d likely log even more minutes, he’d need to
get lighter and build his core and lower body strength.
為了應付82場例行賽事,以及可能的大量上場時間,教練團和訓練師給 Pekovic 設定目

“That’s what I love about Pek,” Bayno said. “He’s such a coachable kid.
He's as high an IQ player we have. You tell him to do something one time, you
do it one time, and he does it immediately. That’s what makes him fun to work
with, and I think the sky’s the limit for him. I think he could have a
breakout year and be better than anyone expects.”

Bayno and Pekovic spent two weeks together training two to three hours each day
in preparation for this fall’s Training Camp. The objective was to build on
the skill set Pekovic already has and expand in some areas they didn’t quite
have enough time to master during the shortened lockout season a year ago—in
particular his ability to finish with his left hand, something opposing teams
honed in on in their scouting reports.
為了準備季前訓練營,Bayno 和 Pekovic 花了兩個星期,每天訓練兩到三小時。目標
是琢磨 Pekovic 原本擅用的技巧,也學習其他原本沒時間學習的部分,特別是左手終
