Focus Area Comments
Hitting Ability: Horton makes good, conistent contact, displays excellent bat
control and sprays the ball to all fields.
Power: There is not much power in Horton's swing.
Running Speed: He's an average runner who runs better underway.
Base Running: Horton should have the ability to steal some bases and is very good
at taking the extra base.
Arm Strength: The arm strength grades out as average, maybe a tick above.
Fielding: He's got good hands.
Range: He's not the prototypical defender at short, and his speed doesn't play
well in terms of range, but there's enough that he can stay there.
Physical Description: Horton fits the mold of typical middle infielders in terms
of being not that big and slender.
Medical Update: Healthy.
Strengths: Bat control. Horton really knows how to handle the bat well. He's
also, overall, a pretty good defender.
Weaknesses: There's little power and little to project. He doesn't necessarily
wow you at short, leading some to wonder if he's a future utility
guy.
Summary: Horton is a nice college shortstop with excellent bat control and the
ability to make good consistent contact. He can run a little bit and
does a nice job catching the ball in the field. It's uncertain whether
it's a package that will be enough to make him an everyday shortstop,
but worst-case, he makes for a very good utility guy.

Scouting Report:
Among the second tier of college position players, Horton has the best
combination of performance and tools. He was a second-team All-American as a
sophomore, when he won the Atlantic Coast Conference batting title with a .395
mark and helped carry North Carolina to the College World Series. He struggled
in the Cape Cod League last summer, however, and has an unorthodox approach at
the plate. What he does best as a hitter is use his hands to square balls on
the barrel and use the whole field. He has excellent strike-zone awareness and
lets balls travel deep in the hitting zone. He's an average runner and an
adequate defender with a chance to stay at shortstop, though his range will
never be a plus. He has a solid-average arm, though he struggles with accuracy
occasionally. Scouts who like him compare him to Adam Kennedy as an offensive-
minded doubles machine who can stay in the middle of the field. Other teams
have little interest in drafting him in the top five rounds.
