Bats: Right Throws: Right Report Date(s): 02/16/07 Game(s): Oral Roberts Focus Area Comments Fastball: Demel was throwing his fastball up to 94 mph against Oral Roberts. FB Movement: Demel's fastball has plus life. Slider: Demel's slider was in the 78-80 mph range, though he wasn't consistent with it. Changeup: Demel's changeup was a swing and miss pitch. Though it's a straight change, it had a split-finger action to it. Control: With the exception of some sliders that were up in the zone, Demel commanded all three pitches well. Poise: Demel is a very good competitor, with an aggressive nature who comes right after hitters. Physical Description: Demel is not very big and has a softer body, but is surprisingly strong. He comes at hitters with a lower 3/4 arm slot. Medical Update: Healthy. Strengths: A fastball with plus velocity and life and a nasty changeup for an out pitch Weaknesses: His slider. He gets around it at times, causing it to be up in the zone. It will need to be tightened at the next level. Summary: Demel旧 been a starter and reliever in his career, but it seems almost definite his future will be in the bullpen. With a fastball in the mid-90s, a slider that can be a plus pitch and a changeup that has a split-finger type action to it, he旧 got the stuff to get to the big leagues quickly, albeit with a maximum effort delivery. Scouting Report: Demel broke Josh Beckett's single-season strikeout record with 188 at Spring (Texas) High, and he has set the career saves mark at Texas Christian. He also has enjoyed success as a starter for the Horned Frogs, but pro teams project him as a reliever because he's small (6 feet, 185 pounds) and has a lot of violence in his delivery. That max-effort approach does produce nasty stuff, however. Demel has a 92-94 mph fastball that can touch 96, and it has armside run. His slider may be his best pitch, though at times he'll rely on it too much. He also has a changeup that drops off at the plate, giving him a weapon against lefthanders. While his mechanics make scouts cringe, Demel never has had arm problems.
