He’s a very instinctive baseball player.” (Hannah) We really like Hannah’s bat…we really think he can hit (Eierman) the team was pleasantly surprised to be able to take him with the 70th overall pick in the draft. We think there’s a chance he can stay at shortstop. We like his defensive ability. That risk was expedited when it was revealed that Murray would still head to Oklahoma to play football this fall. He does bring a lot of upside as an athletic outfielder who’s improved his hitting this spring. Keep An Eye On: RHP Gus Varland has a fastball that touches 97 and struck out 79 batters while walking just 14 this spring. OF Devin Foyle doesn’t have a plus tool to speak of but he’s an excellent hitter with track record in the Big 12. His athletic tools are exceptional but scouts weren’t totally sold on his skills until recently. He may need more time than the other college bats due to contact concerns but his upside is superb. Oakland Athletics: OF Kyler Murray, University of Oklahoma Here's our first stunner of the night. A few weeks ago it was unthinkable that Murray -- the quarterback at Oklahoma with Baker Mayfield now in the NFL -- would go this high. But over the last couple of days it became clear that Murray was interested in pursuing a baseball career and would sign. The expectation is that he will play quarterback at OU in the fall and then focus solely on baseball. He would've been an easy first-round pick out of high school three years ago if he'd been signable, and he's arguably the best athlete in the Draft. What also sticks out about Murray is that he made a dramatic improvement this year with the Sooners after not playing much baseball the previous two seasons. 5. Athletics Oakland began the draft with a bold move, taking Oklahoma quarterback/ outfielder Kyler Murray at No. 9 after he promised to give up football after this fall. He has game-changing speed and the potential to make an impact at the plate and in center field. Dallas Baptist outfielder Jameson Hannah (second round) and Missouri State shortstop Jeremy Eierman (supplemental second) are toolsy collegians who could have fit in the first round. The A's spent most of the second day collecting college performers, beginning with Louisiana-Lafayette left-hander Hogan Harris (third), whose fastball reaches 98 mph, and Arizona first baseman Alfonso Rivas (fourth), a line-drive machine. Washington right-hander Joe DeMers (11th) and Concordia (Minn.) righty Gus Varland are third-day sleepers. JJ Schwarz, No. 196 on the Top 200, was the highest-profile player to be selected in the round, with the A's taking him with the 233rd overall pick. The son of former big league pitcher Jeff Schwarz, he looked like a first-round lock after an outstanding freshman season at Florida before inconsistent sophomore and junior campaigns. He does have some tools to catch, though it's Schwarz's robust right-handed power that will be his calling card to the big leagues. ‧ The A's used their 11th-round pick on right-hander Joe DeMers, a former standout at USA Baseball's National High School Invitational who pitched to a 2.56 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP this past spring while appearing in 16 games (14 starts) for the University of Washington. Fangraph https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/american-league-draft-recap/ The Kyler Murray (1) selection was the headline of Day 1. Early indications are that Oakland is going pay him $5 million and let him play football this fall, then play baseball only going forward, but he’s not a lock to win the job at OU… Dallas Baptist CF Jameson Hannah (2) is an elite college performer with excellent timing at the plate, all-fields ability, and several years of strong statistics… After a down year, Missouri State SS Jeremy Eierman (CBB) was a nice buy-low at pick 70. He has plus pull power… LHP Hogan Harris (3) is a hard-throwing college lefty who had an oblique issues this year but took to a move from the pen to the rotation… Alfonso Rivas (4) is a hit-first first-base-only prospect from Arizona with some pop… Brady Feigl (5) is a strike-thrower with solid-average stuff and some deception… Lawrence Butler (6) is a broad-shouldered high-school right fielder with big power potential, but he’s quite raw… Florida C J.J. Schwarz (8) is probably a first-base-only prospect with plus raw power in pro ball, but it’s worth a chance to see if he can still catch… UNC Wilmington RHP Clark Cota (10) put up bonkers numbers with a Mark Melancon-type look and a heater that was up to 95 mph. Scout.com 9 Oakland Athletics Kyler Murray, OF, Oklahoma The first shocker of the draft; if Murray was not so set on playing football, then this pick would make a ton of sense. The Athletics have not had an issue with size and have targeted in both the draft and trades athletic, up the middle players with speed. The talk is that he is still going to play football this fall, which is surprising to me for a team picking in the top ten. Murray has had limited reps and could have more ceiling than the typical college player, as he has moved around and not had the reps of others. On talent alone, he is a top ten player, but this is a very big risk. 50 Oakland Athletics Jameson Hannah, OF, Dallas Baptist "Give us your small speed demons who are yearning to play baseball" should be the A’s new motto. They take their second centerfielder in a row who is under six feet, with 70-grade speed. Hannah might not have the loud tools across the board like Murray, but I would be more willing to bet on him being an average regular down the road. 70 Oakland Athletics Jeremy Eierman, SS, Missouri State Here was one of my favorite picks in the second round range. Eierman had his share of struggles this year, but at pick 70, he is a steal. His power/speed combo is rare for a potential shortstop and the bat should play if you move him off position. The A’s focus in this draft was on athletes and they keep drafting them.
