STURRIDGE STRIKES FOR UNDER 21S
Posted on: Thu 24 Mar 2011
Daniel Sturridge continued his recent run of scoring form when he netted
in England Under 21s comprehensive victory away to Denmark on Thursday
afternoon.
Stuart Pearce's side won a friendly game 4-0 with Sturridge, who has
scored four times in six appearances on loan at Bolton, supplying the
third, a second-half right-foot finish inside the box after collecting a
Scott Sinclair pass. Pearce described Sturridge's appointment as
'outstanding'.
Former Chelsea man Sinclair was also on target, his goal from a rebound
when a Sturridge shot was initially saved, as were Manchester United
striker Danny Welbeck and Sunderland's Jordan Henderson. The Under 21s had
not scored in their previous three matches.
Sturridge played 87 minutes and Chelsea left-back Ryan Bertrand the whole
game. Josh McEachran came on with 67 minutes played, Jack Cork with 79
minutes gone.
Fabio Borini came on at half-time in Italy Under 21s' 3-1 friendly win
over Sweden, the game held in Carlo Ancelotti's home town of Reggio Emilia.

INTERNATIONALS: THREE EURO POINTS FOR THREE
Posted on: Sat 26 Mar 2011
Branislav Ivanovic, Florent Malouda and Fernando Torres celebrated
international victories on Friday night but there was defeat for Petr
Cech.
The Chelsea goalkeeper kept Spain at bay for 69 minutes by which time they
were 1-0 ahead thanks to a first-half goal. However the world champions,
who introduced Torres at half-time, netted twice through David Villa, the
winner from the penalty spot. It was a busy game for Cech who made a
series of fine saves. His nation are second in their Euro 2012 qualifying
group but now trail the Spanish by six points.
Serbia, who were forced to play their home game versus Northern Ireland
behind closed doors following crowd trouble in a recent match against
Italy, also came from behind to win 2-1. Ivanovic played the full game and
had an early effort cleared off the line and later chip go narrowly wide.
Serbia are third in their group, six points behind leaders Italy.
France scored a goal in each half away to Luxembourg, Florent Malouda
playing the full 90 minutes and winning a free-kick that led to the
opening goal. An unimpressive 2-0 win puts France four points clear at the
top of their group but having played a game more than their challengers.
Jeffrey Bruma was in action for the Dutch Under 21 side but they lost 3-1
at home to Germany in a friendly fixture.
Conor Clifford played the full match as Republic of Ireland Under 21s went
down to two goals in the last five minutes away to Portugal, that also a
friendly.
In the first of a double-header of games away to Peru, France Under 20s
with Gael Kakuta in the side, won 3-0.

INTERNATIONALS: LAMPARD NETS
Posted on: Sat 26 Mar 2011
Frank Lampard scored while captain John Terry and Ashley Cole completed
the 90 minutes as England beat Wales 2-0 in Cardiff on Saturday.
Despite speculation that he could be among the substitutes, Lampard was
named in England's starting line-up alongside his Chelsea team-mates,
given freedom to attack with former Blue Scott Parker and Arsenal's Jack
Wilshere behind him in a three-man midfield.
It was the 32-year-old who opened the scoring inside the opening 10
minutes, silencing the 69,000 capacity Millenium Stadium crowd by firing
England ahead from the penalty spot following James Collins's trip on
Aston Villa team-mate Ashley Young.
England went further ahead in the first half through Darren Bent, after
another former Chelsea player, Glen Johnson, started a move down the
right.
It was a comfortable afternoon for the reinstated skipper Terry, while
left-back Cole spent most of his afternoon camped in Welsh territory.
Wales did offer slightly more attacking threat after the break, but rarely
troubled the English who now sit top of Group G alongside Montenegro, each
with 10 points from four games.

INTERNATIONALS: STALEMATE FOR ZHIRKOV
Posted on: Sun 27 Mar 2011
A spread-out programme of international football meant another Chelsea
player in action on Saturday.
Russia remain neck-and-neck with Slovakia and Republic of Ireland at the
top of their Euro 2012 qualification group after taking one point from a
visit to neighbours Armenia. Yury Zhirkov played the full 90 minutes and
it took a very good save from the Armenia goalkeeper to prevent the
Chelsea man from scoring in the first half.
Yossi Benayoun, who has not played a game since September, was named on
the bench for Israel's 2-1 home win over Latvia but did not take part in
the game. Israel are four points behind group leaders Greece whom they
play at home in September.
Chelsea schoolboy Nathaniel Chalobah captained England Under 17s as they
came from behind to beat Northern Ireland 3-2 in their opening game of
three-team European Championship qualification tournament in Belgium.

The FA has confirmed that John Terry, Frank Lampard and Ashley Cole are
not required for England's friendly international against Ghana this week.
Following England's 2-0 win over Wales on Saturday, as well as the three
Chelsea players heading back to the club, Michael Dawson is returning to
Tottenham Hotspur, Wayne Rooney to Manchester United and Kyle Walker to

DROGBA DOUBLE IN AFRICA
Posted on: Sun 27 Mar 2011
Didier Drogba was twice on target as Ivory Coast came from behind to win
an African Cup of Nations qualifier against Benin.
The match was meant to be a home one for the Elephants but the current
political and social situation in Ivory Coast meant it was played in Accra
in neighbouring Ghana.
Salomon Kalou also started the game and had an early goal disallowed when
his Chelsea team mate was ruled offside. Drogba later made amends. Benin
had gone ahead midway through the first half following defensive and
goalkeeping mistakes but the Ivorian captain scored a superb equaliser
just before the break before netting a 76th winner to make it three
victories from three qualification matches for his nation. They are five
points clear in their group.
In another African qualifier, Nigeria, with John Mikel Obi a starter, were
comfortable 4-0 winners over Ethiopia at home, taking the lead in less
than a minute. The Chelsea midfielder played an important pass in the
build up to the third goal. Nigeria are now a point off the top of their
group.
Brazil's international friendly against Scotland required Ramires
(pictured below) and David Luiz to travel a short distance to north London
where they were 2-0 winners. Ramires played the full game and had chances
to score as his side commanded the game. David Luiz remained on the bench
throughout. Both goals were scored by Santos player Neymar.
Milan Lalkovic this weekend played the first 82 minutes of Slovakia Under
21s' 3-2 home friendly win over their counterparts from Finland. The
Chelsea reserve and youth team striker didn't make it on to the scoresheet.

MONDAY INTERNATIONAL ACTION FOR YOUNG BLUES
Posted on: Tue 29 Mar 2011
Three Chelsea players were handed starts by England Under 21 coach Stuart
Pearce on Monday night but they tasted defeat in a friendly match held in
Preston.
Left-back Ryan Bertrand was made captain of a side containing eight
changes from the one that won in Denmark last week. Jack Cork and Josh
McEachran were both given their second starts at this level in midfield.
An England lead came early through Nathan Delfouneso who like Cork is
currently playing on loan at Burnley. McEachran hit the sidenetting with a
chance to double the lead but Iceland always looked threatening on the
break and they levelled just before the half-time.
Cork, who had been caught in possession ahead of that goal, was
substituted at half-time due to illness. Iceland scored their winner from
a corner before further substitutions saw Bertrand replaced on 74 minutes
and McEachran on 83.
In another Under 21 fixture on Monday, goalkeeper Matej Delac, currently
on loan at Vitesse Arnhem, was selected for his second game of the week
for Croatia Under 21s, playing the first half of a 3-2 home win over
Hungary. Four days earlier he played the whole of a 2-1 home friendly
defeat by Ukraine.
In their qualifying tournament in Belgium on Monday, Nathaniel Chalobah
skippered an England Under 17 side that repeated the feat of their first
game by coming from behind to win, this time beating the host nation 2-1.
England now need victory against Spain on Thursday to win the tournament.

CORK LEAVES HOSPITAL
Posted on: Tue 29 Mar 2011
Jack Cork has been discharged from hospital his loan club Burnley have
confirmed.
Due to illness the player was substituted at half-time in last night's
England Under 21 match versus Iceland, held at Preston's Deepdale
Stadium.
Burnley today (Tuesday) report the following on their official website:
'Jack Cork has been discharged from hospital after undergoing tests. The
on-loan Clarets' midfielder stayed in hospital in Preston overnight after
feeling unwell during the game.
'The 21-year-old was replaced and left the ground at half time with
England under-21 coach Stuart Pearce confirming afterwards that he had
been taken to hospital as a precautionary measure after suffering from
"palpitations."'
He will be assessed by the Chelsea medical staff this week.
Cork is spending the season on loan with the Championship club for whom he
has made 39 appearances this campaign.

INTERNATIONALS: BENAYOUN BACK IN ACTION
Posted on: Tue 29 Mar 2011
Yossi Benayoun (pictured) made a return to competitive football on Tuesday
night, appearing for the final 20 minutes in Israel's European
Championship qualifying victory over Georgia.
The Chelsea man, injured since September with an Achilles tear, came on in
the 71st minute and helped his side achieve a 1-0 win, their goal coming
just before the hour. The win puts the Israelis third in Group F, a point
behind leaders Greece, but they have played a game more than both the
Greeks and Croatia in second.
Petr Cech kept a clean sheet as Czech Republic beat Liechtenstein 2-0 in
Ceske Budejovice, making one good save from David Hasler, pushing the ball
around his post. The win leaves the Czechs in second place of European
Championship qualifying Group I, six points behind leaders Spain after
five games.
Fernando Torres was an unused substitute for the Spanish on Tuesday night,
as they survived a scare to win 3-1 in Lithuania.
Branislav Ivanovic played all of Serbia's 1-1 draw away to Estonia, a
disappointing result with the home side's equaliser coming just six
minutes from time in Tallinn. The Chelsea man forced an early save from
the Estonian goalkeeper.
Florent Malouda was a starter for France as they entertained Croatia in
Paris, playing the first 58 minutes of the 0-0 draw before being replaced
by Franck Ribery.
Yury Zhirkov started in a friendly between future World Cup-hosting
nations Russia and Qatar, held in the Gulf state and ending in a 1-1 draw.
John Mikel Obi was also in action, helping Nigeria to a 3-0 friendly home
win over Kenya.
There was no Chelsea involvement on the field at Wembley after Fabio
Capello released John Terry, Ashley Cole and Frank Lampard from his squad
to face Ghana in a friendly, but Michael Essien, on a break from
international duty, was in the stadium to see Asamoah Gyan equalise late
on to cancel out Andy Carroll's opener.
At Under 21 level, Fabio Borini, who is on loan with Swansea City, came on
15 minutes into the second half with his team losing 2-0 in Germany. He
scored with a header, his 85th minute goal earning his team a 2-2 draw.
Rhys Taylor, spending the season with Crewe Alexandra, made three
important stops for Wales Under 21s in Andorra, helping his side to a 1-0
victory in Andorra. It was their first qualifying game for the 2013
Finals, to be held in Israel.
Taylor's fellow goalkeeper Jan Sebek was unused as Czech Republic U21s
lost 1-0 at home to France.

CHALOBAH LEADS YOUNG ENGLAND TO FINALS
Posted on: Thu 31 Mar 2011
Nathaniel Chalobah captained England Under 17s to a notable victory on
Thursday evening, beating Spain to qualify for May's European Championship
Finals.
The young England team needed all three points from their last match in a
four-team tournament held in Belgium to qualify, and did so by a score of
2-1, the Spanish only finding the net late into stoppage time at the end
of the game.
The same outcome from a match against Spain made England European
champions at this level last year. Josh McEachran was part of that team,
as was Chalobah (pictured) who is a still a schoolboy despite being a
regular in central defence or midfield in the Chelsea reserve and youth
teams this season.
England U17s join hosts Serbia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany,
the Netherlands and Romania in Tuesday's draw for the Finals.
One year younger in the England representative age groups, there were
three Chelsea players in the Under 16 squad that this week retained the
Victory Shield, an annual tournament between the four home nations.
The England side is managed by former Chelsea player Kenny Swain and the
three Chelsea Academy players involved were Ali Gordon and John Swift who
have played for the youth team this season, and Fankaty Dabo. Also in the
squad was Charlton Academy player Diego Poyet, son of another former
Chelsea player and current Brighton manager Gustavo Poyet.
