The following is a transcript of the medi a availability session, held at Bank One Ballpark. SUNS CHAIRMAN JERRY COLANGELO: This day really didn't play out the way I had in tended when I woke up this morning, but that's one thing life is like in this b usiness. You just never know what each day is going to bring. Suns CEO Jerry Colangelo discusses the trade agreement. Here's what has transpired. The Phoenix Suns and the New Jersey Nets have enter ed into a deal. It cannot be completed until July 18 and that's because of base compensation issues, contracts and it's more involved than the two players. I' m confirming that without question Stephon Marbury and Jason Kidd are the two m ajor ingredients in this trade. The rest basically is making it work because of the cap and the numbers. The intention was that the players would have been contacted over the next coup le of days and we would have this announcement come July 18. Unfortunately, the re was a leak that came out of the East and before we had the opportunity to co ntact our players the rumor was out there. We found ourselves in a position of having to originally say, "No comment" because that's basically what the two te ams had agreed to. We had difficulty finding (Nets President) Rod Thorn today, but when he finally did return the call and I advised him of what had transpire d during the course of the day, in terms of the rumors and the speculation, we decided we needed to get in touch with our players immediately and make this ty pe of announcement. I want to say some things about Jason. I have a great deal of respect for Jason Kidd, both as a person and a basketball player. He has a tremendous heart as a n athlete and, literally, I think he has shown the ability to will his team to wins. I can think of a lot of games during the course of his career here where I believe that was true. He did everything asked of him as a player. He certain ly received a great deal of recognition for the job that he did. I wish him not hing but the best because I think he is a terrific guy and I think he is a terr ific basketball player. The question might be, "Why might you make this kind of trade?" I guess we fall into a general malaise, in my opinion, regarding this franchise, which has had so much success over the last 30-plus years. We are fourth in win-loss percent age in the history of the league. Over the last 13 years, I believe we have ave raged over 50 wins a year, making the playoffs every year. Yet there is a gener al attitude about the makeup of this team that I call a general malaise on the part of our fans. A lot of things have happened. We've had to make a lot of adjustments and I wan t to go back to the team we were trying to put together. We were trying to put together a team when we had a guy named (Antonio) McDyess. Of course, in a big heist, he ended up in Denver. That's something I just can't forget, but it cert ainly upset our plan. In this business you continually have new plans. You put a group together, you take a run. If it doesn't work, you better mix it up because you'll go right do wn the tubes. That's one thing we've been able to do usually without missing a beat. As you know, (Tom) Gugliotta came into this past season injured. Penny (H ardaway) came in injured and through it all this team won 50-plus games. That's all well and good, but that's not enough on the part of our franchise. The com mitment to do as much as we can to improve, to win, is something we are going t o be consistent in when we go forward. In Stephon Marbury, we believe he's one of the elite athletes and players in th e NBA. He's 24 years old. He's an All-Star performer. He's capable of getting 4 0 or 50 on any given night. He's a big time scorer and he's the total package a s it relates to his basketball talent and ability. These are two great basketball players being traded by their respective teams f or different reasons. We are excited about Marbury. I think when you look at a Marbury and a (Shawn) Marion on the same court, same age, and the opportunity t o grow together; you could throw Jake (Tsakalidis) in there with development. T hree young early 20 players, three pieces and that's where you go. That's where you start. As I said there are some other pieces to this deal and beyond this deal. Don't be surprised if there is something more with yet another team, but that's for another day and another story. This is a difficult day for me as it relates to Jason. Again, what I said earli er, I have great respect for him. He's done an awful lot for this franchise and I know he's hurting. The one thing I really feel terrible about because I've b een so careful about this in my career is he didn't hear it from us first. When this speculative story hit the streets today that's how he and his wife (Jouma na) were advised about a deal. Obviously, I wanted the opportunity to see him o r them face to face and tell them what had transpired and why. But it wasn't me ant to be and I feel badly about that. I did have some conversation with Jason. I have Marbury's number. I have not be en able to reach him as of yet. But that's it in a nutshell. This would have ha ppened on July 18. We would have had time to talk with the people involved in t he deal in advance, but obviously because of the league we weren't able to sit on it. I called the league. You would rather not have names discussed in a prop osed trade that doesn't take place until (July 18), but we have no choice. So this is an acknowledgement that Jason Kidd will be going to New Jersey, Step hon Marbury comes to Phoenix. I hope and pray it's a deal that both teams can l ook back on and say this was a good deal for both teams. I think this kind of a deal has that opportunity because of the players involved. From our standpoint, this is saying, "The ride's been OK. Yeah, we've won some, but it's not enough." I think the fans deserve more and my commitment is to do whatever I can to be responsive to them and I'm excited about Marbury joining this team. QUESTION: Did Jason's off-the-court incident earlier this year have anything to do with this trade? COLANGELO: No. This was a basketball decision. This was a basketball judgment c all regarding where we were as a franchise, where we were going and what our pr eference was in going forward. QUESTION: Can you talk a little more about the conversation you had with Jason? Following Wednesday night's draft, Suns coach Scott Skiles returned home to Ind iana and Suns President Bryan Colangelo traveled to Los Angeles, leaving the Su ns' CEO to tackle the press conference duties. COLANGELO: Well, as you can imagine it's difficult to advise someone when they' ve heard something about it from the media and that's what had taken place in t his case. I think he was upset. He mentioned something about respect and if the re's one thing I believe we've always attempted to do, maybe not to the satisfa ction of every athlete who has worn a Suns uniform, we've always treated people with respect. We've gone way out of our way to make him feel at home and I hop e he leaves with a good taste in his mouth. You'll never hear me say a negative word about Jason Kidd. QUESTION: When did you come to the realization it was time to trade Jason? COLANGELO: You hear me say things like, "You are always evaluating as you go al ong." Well, we've had five years and we've had a lot of other things affect our basketball team other than just focusing in on one player. But this is a chang e in direction and it was one that we felt as an organization we wanted to take . This was a deal that the basketball people in our organization were unanimous ly in favor of making and that's a tribute to both players, the key players who are involved in this deal. You are talking about two All-Star guards. That's what you are talking about. Y ou are not talking about an unload of players for contract purposes or clearing a roster and bringing in three new players. This is an All-Star guard for an A ll-Star guard. They are different types of guards. They are different types of players without question and we felt it was just time. I can't tell you when it actually hit us between the eyes. QUESTION: Do you have any regrets about never seeing a backcourt of Kidd and (P enny) Hardaway hardly ever get to play together? COLANGELO: It never happened. Maybe it was never meant to be. Again expectation s are one thing, fulfilling expectations are something else. Those are things o ut of your control. You can only deal with what is in your control. You have to be willing to take the hits as they come as it relates to injuries and we've c ertainly had our share, but I'm not sure any team has been immune to that. So w e just keep on moving forward, we move on. I think the focus is here as a team, as a franchise, we are going in a different direction here. This is not a cons ervative Phoenix Suns. We are stepping out. QUESTION: Jerry, you talked about the general malaise. Why do you think that ha s occurred and is Stephon Marbury the kind of player who can eliminate the mala ise? COLANGELO: The malaise is basically, in my opinion, all the factors we've been reading about recently that have affected the marketplace here today in Arizona . You could talk about the saturation of teams. You could talk about the proble ms with athletes, which in my opinion is quite over-exaggerated when you compar e the number of instances to those of players who don't have any issues or prob lems at all. And they are a microcosm of society. That's a factor. Pricing is a factor, but my attitude on pricing is we are in the middle of the pack in pricing and you can't have it both ways. You want a good team, you want a good product, you have to be willing to compete. I see teams increasing tick et prices every year 10, 15 percent and we'll get knocked if we raise something 25 cents because it's a big story. So what I'm asking for is for people to be a little bit more practical in under standing what we are trying to do. We want to give you a winner. It takes guts to make decisions. It takes some wise decisions and a little bit of luck to put a winning team on the floor. We are always sensitive to pricing. So pricing ha s been an issue. The other thing is when you win and you are not going anywhere, and that's what has happened. Our fans have gotten a little bit spoiled in terms of winning. I know a lot of cities who would give their right arm to have as many years winn ing 50-plus games like the Suns have. It's good for the record book, but it's n ot there in terms of what we really desire and that's to win and win big. There's nothing like getting to the Conference Finals. There's nothing like pla ying in the Finals and I can't say there is nothing like winning (a championshi p) because as close as we have come, we haven't won it. So I'm thinking futuris tically. I'm thinking of a foundation of some young players, talented players w e are trying to put together, that we have put together and we'll keep adding t o them. We want to give a group of players a chance, a run to be able to win an d that's what I'm looking forward to. QUESTION: What are some of the two differences between Jason and Stephon? COLANGELO: Jason is a point. Marbury I would call him a tweener like (Allen) Iv erson, plays both positions. Jason is one who distributes the ball first and th en maybe looks to shoot the ball. I'd say this guy Marbury is an explosive scor er capable of giving you big, big numbers as he has. He's averaged over 22 a ga me (23.9) this year. I remember a couple of games where I've seen him just be o utstanding -- the All-Star Game last year, a game here if I'm not mistaken. So they are different types. I would say Marbury is a different type of package. D efensively I think he is outstanding. Marbury is very tough, very good defensiv ely. So is Jason. One's more of a scorer, one's more of a point guard than the other. QUESTION: How do you feel about Stephon as a person and how well do you know hi m? COLANGELO: We know second hand a lot about Stephon Marbury and our coaching sta ff did their due diligence in talking to all the people who know him. They feel very comfortable with Stephon. He is a young guy, a New York City kid. He had his situation in Minnesota. Think about the three guys they had up there when t hey had Marbury and Googs (Tom Gugliotta) before he was injured and the big guy (Kevin Garnett). He left with a little bit of concern over contract and etc., but we accept Stephon Marbury just as he is. We are excited to have him and to the best of our knowledge he's going to be just fine. QUESTION: Do you consider this the first step of a complete overhaul or is it j ust another piece? COLANGELO: No. I stopped short of that. What I said was we are not finished. I would say focus on a nucleus of what we are doing. We have contractual commitme nts to a number of people and I'm not categorizing anyone else. I'm just statin g to you that when you have three young players at three different positions, a ssuming Jake can make the progress we hope he makes and he's got a long way to go. But if he were to make progress each year as we go forward, Shawn is one of the most talented small forwards in the league and Marbury is one of the top 1 0 players in the league. Those three guys could conceivably be the nucleus. We are going to need a healthy Penny. We are going to need other people this ye ar, but you know, my focus isn't on this year. This is not about trying to put a team together that is going to try a one-year run here. We are going to add t he right people here -- athletes we need. There is nothing like young legs. Let s face it, this is the beginning in terms of changing our direction. QUESTION: Besides Marbury and Kidd are there any other players involved in the trade? COLANGELO: There are and those will be disclosed on July 18, and it's all for c ap purposes. The ingredients in this trade were the two players and how do we m ake it work for cap purposes? So we had to include some other players. QUESTION: Jerry, when did the trade discussions start? COLANGELO: I can't really tell you that because the discussions took place betw een (Suns President) Bryan (Colangelo) and Rod Thorn specifically and I don't k now when they started, but postseason for sure. QUESTION: Is part of this about Scott Skiles having his own players, his own te am to work with? COLANGELO: No, I wouldn't say that. We collectively look at what players we wan t wearing Phoenix Suns uniforms and obviously you want the decision making proc ess to be unanimous and Scott Skiles is as excited as I'll get regarding the ac quisition of Stephon Marbury. Now he loves Jason Kidd and respects Jason Kidd a nd is thankful as much as I am for what he contributed, but focusing in on what we are acquiring there is some excitement to what that brings to the table. QUESTION: Do you have any idea why there has been a failure to connect with the community with this particular team and Jason? Do you have any feelings on tha t? It seems in the past they would support Charles (Barkley), Kevin (Johnson), Tom Chambers and (Dan) Majerle. It seems to be absent the last couple of years. COLANGELO: I think every player has his own personality and some people are voi d of an outgoing personality. Again, I would never knock any of our people. I w ould just say to you collectively as a team, I think we fell short of some of t hat enthusiasm you refer to in some of our older players of the past like Kevin Johnson and Dan Majerle and people like that. I do think even a player like Shawn on this team has been kind of held back emo tionally because there are not enough people out there with him to feed off of, if you know what I mean. I think there is a great opportunity here with those two young guys to see some of that happen with Marbury and Marion. I really do. I'm excited about that. QUESTION: Because they are younger players, you talked about a long-term invest ment, you also talked about the 50-win seasons. Do you think the fans might be expecting a step back in terms of win totals, in terms of team expectations for those long-term benefits? COLANGELO: I just want the fans to understand one thing. I wasn't satisfied wit h 50 wins. It's as simple as that. It's easy to fall into a comfort level and s ay, "We are competitive. We make the playoffs every year. Gee, why don't you su pport us and be happy?" No, I think people expect more than that. I wanted to indicate once again, and I've had to do this a few times the last t hree decades, that there is a commitment here to be the very best that we can. We've had to reinvent the wheel, I don't know, five or six or seven times, so i t's nothing new. But I prefer to do it in a way where you replace pieces with o ther pieces for the right reasons. And in this case, I think we have an opportu nity. The door was there. The door was open to bring a couple of young exciting playe rs together at 24 years of age and I think that's important. That's a key here. Years take their toll in the NBA. Young legs, young athleticism, we have that now in the twosome, but we have to bank on a lot of other people making contrib utions this year. And what does it mean? I have no idea of what it means in wins and losses. We a re going to win. We are going to compete. Scott won't let anything else happen. There's enough talent on this team to win a lot of games. What does it transla te into numbers of wins? I have no idea. I'll tell you one thing: Marbury can b eat you in a playoff game by himself if he's in that kind of situation. That's the kind of talent he has similar to Iverson. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc) ◆ From: 210.68.131.56
