And that's got nothing to do with his hair. A bleached blond Mohawk or spiked punk rock 'do at the top of a wiry 6-foot-9 frame will grab plenty of attention, but the Russian is earning more double takes around the league for his double-double skills. "He's a great defender, first of all," said Dirk Nowitzki, the Mavs' two-time All-Star power forward. "He's long. He blocks shots. He plays hard and is a great finisher around the rim. I like his game a lot. He's going to have a great future in this league." In his third season, Kirilenko has established himself as one of the NBA's best international players. Though he's no longer a secret, December served as a coming-out month for the 22-year-old nicknamed AK-47. Kirilenko, whose nickname is both a nod to the Russian made rifle and his uniform number, set or matched single-game career highs in points (30), rebounds (16), assists (7), steals (8) and blocked shots (7) last month. In his third season, Kirilenko has established himself as one of the NBA's best international players. He ranks third in the league in steals (2.15) and blocked shots (2.82). Only five times in NBA history has someone averaged at least two of each in the same season. (Hakeem Olajuwon did it four times and David Robinson once.) "I've tried to concentrate more on team actions," Kirilenko said. "I'm just trying to win the game. That's it. That's why I'm trying to be aggressive on both ends. Every plus for the team -- steals, boards, blocks and assists -- it just helps. I think it's important for the team." On the recommendation of Donnie Nelson, the Mavs tried to pry Kirilenko out of Utah four years ago in a trade. The Jazz selected the relatively unknown prospect with the 24th pick of the 1999 NBA Draft. "We didn't know [Utah] knew what a good player he was," Mavs coach Don Nelson said. "At that point, he hadn't played in the USA, but they weren't going for it. We ended up not being able to get him. Donnie has always said that he's really going to be good." Some speculate that Kirilenko is on his way to becoming the best international player in the league. Not so fast, the Utah forward said. In Kirilenko's view, the top two from outside the United States are Sacramento's Peja Stojakovic and a certain player he'll match up with tonight at the Delta Center. "He's first-second with Stojakovic," Kirilenko said of Nowitzki. "This year, probably more Stojakovic. Last year, probably more Nowitzki. They're both definitely superstars. That's a pretty tough matchup, no matter which one. And they're real leaders on their team." Making an impression The Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki is much better known than Utah forward Andrei Kirilenko, but there are some similarities. Kirilenko, who was born in Russia, is 6-foot-9, 225 pounds and didn't play in college; Nowitzki, born in Germany, is 7-0, 245 and also didn't play in college.
