(A.J.Puk)
Kubota:"At no point during the spring did we think we would have a chance to
talk about him at the sixth pick.I probably did a little jig. We were really
happy. It wasn’t our intention going in [to take three pitchers], but the fact
that these three specific pitchers were available, we were really excited. We
had all of them evaluated at one time or another as potential first-round
picks. For them to be there at those three picks for us, we think this is a
potential big step forward with our pitching depth and we are excited to see
how their careers take off from here."
“Teams were probably trying to maximize their pools at the top,I’m not really
privy to what conversations were had, but we were completely happy that it
worked to our advantage.”
“There were just some stretches where he got into a few command ruts. There
were a few physical things that held him back, as well. But the stuff was the
same as what we had seen from him since last spring. Probably, as much as
anything, it’s just consistency. Consistency of command. That’s probably the
biggest thing that he will have to work on moving forward, but we think he can
do it. We think it is just a matter of experience as much as anything else.”
(Daulton Jefferies)
Jefferies had top-half of the first-round talk earlier in the spring after he
got off to a red-hot start for the Golden Bears. He fell from that ranking when
he missed several weeks with a right shoulder injury. He made only eight starts
for Cal this year, posting a 1.08 ERA in 50 innings. Jefferies struck-out 53
and walked only eight. Kubota acknowledged that Jefferies wouldn’t be ready to
pitch in games right away, but he says the A’s feel good about where Jefferies
is at medically.“We are very confident after some more rehab he will be
100%,We don’t necessarily think that he is right there yet, but we did have
our doctors and trainers examine him and we are very comfortable that he will
be 100% healthy after a little bit more rehab.”
“Picking six and then picking 37, early in the spring, we felt that there was
no chance that Daulton would get to 37.There would probably at some point been
consideration for him at six for us had his pitched the whole year like he did
in the beginning.”
(Logan Shore)
“[Logan] can just really pitch. He’s extremely competitive. He is very
advanced as far as knowing how to use what he has.o be honest, it’s not a sexy
look at times because he pitches at 88-92, but we have seen him throw up to 94
in the past.We think a lot of it is style. He’s just content to use the two-
seamer and sink the ball and get outs, which he has done for three years. He is
a really, really advanced pitcher and he is just a great competitor.

6. Oakland A’s: A.J. Puk LHP Florida
Puk had been a slam dunk to go in the top two picks, so, when he slid to the
A’s, they jumped. While they traditionally take college bats, Puk was too good
to pass on here. The A’s have been connected to several prep arms but, in the
end, they stick to their college approach and get a big lefty with elite
velocity. There is some concern about the fact that he was not able to pitch
deeply into games and his command and control have had issues this year. He is
going to take a little longer than your typical college arm, but it will be
worth it.
37. Oakland A’s: Daulton Jefferies RHP Cal
He is the polar opposite of earlier selection, A.J. Puk. Jefferies is an
undersized righty, who throws in the low 90s. Jefferies had some talk as a
potential top-20 pick, before an injury to his calf, which managed to migrate
to his shoulder and caused him to miss some time. This is a bet on the player
he looked to be before injury, when he looked like a mid-rotation starter.
47. Oakland A's: Logan Shore RHP Florida
There won't be 46 players better than Shore in this draft. If I was placing
odds, he would be the favorite to be the first non reliever up to the majors.
He will rejoin his teammate, AJ Puk. The A’s were extremely focused on
pitching this year. They stuck to the college ranks, which is their typical
approach. Shore isn’t flashy, but he gets results. He should be a solid number
five starter for a lot of years to come.

6) Athletics:A.J. Puk, LHP, University of Florida: In the mix for number one
overall, Puk saw his stock slip with some inconsistent performances late in the
spring. We're still talking about a 6-6 lefty with blistering stuff who posted
a 3.21 ERA with a 95/31 K/BB in 70 innings. He'll need more time than the
typical college arm but could develop into a top-of-the-rotation starter
37) Athletics: Daulton Jefferies, RHP, University of California; Extremely
polished but missed much of year with shoulder trouble; pitched well in last
two outings; 1.08 ERA in 50 innings, 53/8 K/BB.
47) Athletics: Logan Shore, RHP, University of Florida: Strike-throwing starter
was Gators Friday night guy, not A.J. Puk; extremely advanced pitchability;
went 11-0 in 16 starts with 2.40 ERA, 80/15 K/BB in 92 innings; average stuff
but superb command

6. Oakland Athletics: LHP A.J. Puk, Florida
Callis: A week ago, I thought Puk was the top guy for the Phillies, Reds and
Braves. But inconsistency is the knock on Puk, and a lackluster start on
Saturday apparently helped knock him down to No. 6. He can show you a mid-90s
fastball and a wipeout slider, so I think the A's have at least a late-inning
reliever here. If he can get more consistent, they have a front-line starter.
