We felt the bat ability was unique this draft and maybe unique for many drafts. You don’t see that kind of bat speed that often. He’s athletic.” “It reinforced what we felt about him in our evaluations. It was nice to see him perform on a big league field, so you were able to put his performance into a little bit different context than a high school field. It certainly helped. It wasn’t the overriding factor, but it certainly helped.” “It was as impressive a high school workout that I have seen in our stadium since I have been in our scouting department here.He hit in our stadium like big leaguers hit in our stadium.” “There was a lot of dead time and he handled himself extremely well and that certainly adds to the comfort factor. You get to know the kid a little bit better. It’s only one day, but everything helps a little bit.” The A's rated Beck’s speed a 6 on the 2-8 scouting scale, according to Kubota. The A’s didn’t have Beck run a 60-yard dash, but they had reports that he ran a 6.5 60 in another workout. Kubota believes Beck has the tools to remain in centerfield longterm. “We think there is every chance that he will continue to be able to play centerfield as he advances through the minor leagues. He is an above-average runner and we think he is instinctive.” Them being able to examine him certainly increased our confidence in the health of the knee,” “We just had him evaluated very highly. We loved the ability, loved the upside to this player. We think it is a talent with the bat that doesn’t come around very often. This is a talent that we identified really early and scouted a lot. He was a guy that we liked all through this spring.” (Merrell) “He’s got unique athletic ability. His speed tool is probably equal to anybody in this draft and he’s played shortstop and other infield positions and we think that the athletic ability may lend itself to being able to play in the outfield, as well.” “We actually think that he has a chance to play shortstop full-time, but that [versatility] certainly helps” “[He’s a v]ery good contact hitter. If you look at his numbers in his career, that backs that up.We do think he is advanced as a hitter and we think that he has an outstanding speed tool. Those two things work well together.” We think [the power] is developing. We don’t think it is going to be a major part of his game, but we do think he will hit some homeruns and he is strong enough to drive the ball in the gaps. It’s not a strength issue. It’s the style of hitter that he is.” (Deichmann) “We thought he started to come on at the end of last year and [his success this season] was just a natural progression from where he was.We think he’s definitely a corner outfielder. We think he has the athletic ability to play the corner of the outfield,” Kubota said. “His throwing arm is average to plus.” BA http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/al-west-draft-day-two-analysis/ Oakland drafted hitters with its first six selections, mixing potential middle-of-the-diamond athletes—OF Austin Beck (1), SSs Kevin Merrell (1s) and Nick Allen (3) and C Santis Sanchez (5)—with college corner bats OF Greg Deichmann and 3B Will Toffey. All four college arms drafted from rounds six to nine performed well in major conferences. KL http://www.espn.com/blog/keith-law/insider/post?id=7244 (http://thomashsnu.tian.yam.com/album/10800315) JS https://www.minorleagueball.com/2017/6/15/15808634/2017-mlb-draft-american-league-western-division-review Oakland Athletics 1-6) Austin Beck, OF, Lexington, North Carolina 1B-33) Kevin Merrell, SS, University of South Florida 2-43) Greg Deichmann, OF, Louisiana State University 3-81) Nick Allen, SS, San Diego, California 4-111) Will Toffey, 3B, Vanderbilt University 5-141) Santis Sanchez, C, Ceiba, Puerto Rico 6-171) Logan Salow, LHP, University of Kentucky ANALYSIS: Getting the mega-toolsy Beck and the highly-regarded Allen in the same draft is a prep coup, provided Allen (a late first round talent) signs. Polished college performers otherwise dominate but they picked some very good ones, with Merrell’s speed, Deichmann’s power, and Toffey’s pure hitting ability standing out. SLEEPERS: There are some big college names who could advance quickly with polished RHP Parker Dunshee (7th round, Wake Forest), RHP Brian Howard (8th round, TCU) and RHP Wyatt Marks (13th round, Louisiana Lafayette) all capable of providing quick reinforcement. IMPRESSION: Looks very good from where I’m sitting. There’s big upside mixed with college polish, keeping both traditionalists and metrics people happy. Toffey screams Matt Carpenter to me. MLB.com http://m.mlb.com/news/article/235976306/mlb-draft-pick-by-pick-selections-analysis/ 6. Oakland Athletics: OF Austin Beck, North Davidson (N.C.) HS Callis: He has come a long way in a year after tearing up his knee in the North Carolina state playoffs during his junior year. He doesn't have a long track record on the showcase circuit -- at least compared to some of the other top prospects -- but he has one of the best combinations of tools in this Draft. He has raw power, good speed and a chance to stick in center field. 33. Oakland Athletics: SS Kevin Merrell, University of South Florida Callis: Merrell might have been the fastest player in college baseball this spring. He's a tablesetter with some gap power who has played shortstop and second base at South Florida. He could wind up in center field in the long run. -- ※ 發信站: 批踢踢實業坊(ptt.cc), 來自: 223.137.250.180 ※ 文章網址: https://www.ptt.cc/bbs/Athletics/M.1497823850.A.FE5.html
